intercooler, do it or not?
« on: June 09, 2006, 01:30:35 pm »
i dont gonna use a FMIC, simply becouse i dont want this long hoses.
i was thinking of a water to air IC above my inletcollector, but i dont know this work is realy worth it.

i will use waterinjection (daily, with a big tank), so do i realy need a IC?????? what do you suggest?
its a big work do modify a IC to a water to air and make it fit...

what do you think of this?
BTW, its for my diesel.
Will a IC give me more ore less turbolag?

Where is the best place for the waterinjection nozzle?? A - B - C ? with or without a IC?

((dont look to the turbo oil lines, its just for fitting    )

You do not need an intercooler if you use water injection - up to a point.  If you are running 50psi of boost, etc. you should have an intercooler.

An intercooler increases turbo lag, or boost threshold.  It increases the volume of the intake tubing, and causes a pressure loss - the question is how much.  It can be very slight or very large.

I like the idea of water-to-air intercoolers, but they add a lot of weight, they tend to be complicated and make more points for failure, and heat soak very quickly, unless you have a very large water reservoir and a good radiator for the water.

The best place for the water injection nozzle would be C.  Actually, the best would be to make a new intake manifold and shorten the intake path so that at C it entered the intake manifold at the other end.

depends,on how much boost, but i let my tdi go closed wastegate, and it goes like 40psi almost, have you seen  my post on the water injection?its cheap and easy
i have no intercooler either,right now,maybe someday,if i need it

i realy think i dont gonna put a IC on it, only the WI.

I gonna make a custom intake, straight from the turbo to the collector.
But i'm thinking what is the best where the inlet line comes, , just straight, a little bit right in the collector (blue nr1), or go to the middle of the intake collector (like red, nr2)
>>>>

I'm planning something like 30-35PSI becouse this is the top of the turbo, more will not give more air i thought, i cant find maps of the VNT units, but i looked to the normal GT series maps.

@hillfolk'r: its cheap yes, but i dont think a home made system will work that good, (i dont think i understand everything in youre post   )
But a effecient WI system need a high pressure pump and a solonoid or a realy good check valve.
Aquamist is €$€$ but there are good opinions like Greggearhead sells from Snowperfomance, also a other good one is www.coolingmist.com
We realy DONT want a washbore!!!
i will run with 25% methanol (for who wanna try it to, dont go higher on a diesel!!! ) Thats what Richard said on the aquamist board.

50% methanol is proven to work very, very well and still safe.  You can potentially get some diesel knock at percentages higher than 50%, or possibly in an application we havent tested, but that is what we have found gets the most power and EGT reduction.

Aquamist makes an awesome product, but for a long time, they recommended no higher than X% alcohol because their pumps would break down - apparently.  I have no direct expereience, just relaying what I have read.

Richard is a very intelligent and helpful chap, but we have installed water-methanol injection on thousands of Powerstrokes, Cummins, Duramaxes, etc etc.  so until I find otherwise  Iwill stand by the results we have found.
