About 4 days ago, I was travelling home from a friends house and when my engine was warm enough I booted down the north service road.....
As I finish my shift into third, I hear a bang from under the hood, my tach goes dead and my battery light goes red.....
So I'm like WTF , so I pull off, and the motor seems to be running at a faster idle than normal, and louder.... so I shut her down call my dad
While I was waiting for my father, I'm thinking about hoiw stupid I was for not changine the timming belt and tennsioner, but tried to figue out what the problem was....
So the next morning arives, and I get to checking my timming on the motor.... Crank and Cam are in time, but the injector pump was off
So I re did the timming and had another diesel freak come over and check it over, so I decided to paint my valve cover John deer green while I was waiting for the heat to subside.....
Well I did the timming belt and tensioner, made sure nothing hit, by tuning the motor my hand, and then fired it up, and she fired up great.....
I was sure I had blown my motor because of my timming belt, now my only problem is finding the right belt for my ac and alternator....
lol
I just had to replace that belt...
when I called the vw dealer, they gave me "we eye it up..." bullcrap
so I called around and napa was the only place in town that "CLAIMED" to have the right one
it's 9.5/10mm x 740mm ... I believe..
I checked up on etka and that's the measurement they give.... but I still think it's somewhat large as my AC/Alt idler is WAY out.... like.. the end of it's reach out....
i think 10mm width is correct, on my car i had an 11mm belt on becaus eihad to my own out cause auto zones computer had the wrong one listed, the 11 mm was too wide and tore one day, i switched to the 10 and haven't had a problem.

My brother in-law drove my car one day and brought it back. My wife then took it out and called me soon after she left. She says "what does it mean when the battery light is on?" I said don't get on the highway! Come back. Sure enough the belt is missing altogether. So we call my brother in-law and he says "ya the battery light came on half way through my drive" (me) "why didn't you say anything when you brought it back?" (him) "I didn't think it was a big deal!" (me under mt breath) "stupid stupid stupid puts!".
He's broke something every single time he's driven it.
NEVER AGAIN!!!!
wow....
these are the people you that you do the following to...
1. go over to their house, use all but 2 squares of their toilet paper
and
2. eat all their food and everything in the pantry
when they claim you're a bad houseguest - bring up the fact that grocery shopping is much less than a mechanics bill, and that they should be more considerate when borrowing other people's stuff
I have found that slightly smaller belts and a screwdriver work better than the belts the computers call for. Take my word for it.
Or do what I did, and delete the a/c compressor, rig up a half-arsed tensioner bracket and put the 65 amp bosch alternator the book calls for, for an A2 w/out air conditioning.
