i can make headlights behind me disappear totally at night, but i still dont think its enough for me
its fun to flatfoot it for a few seconds  then let up and see the headlights behind me  "turn off and on!"
Throttle cables ftw

I wouldn't touch it till you have an egt gauge, that is the only way to tell. Ask Malone... :P

His 30 page thread started becuase he ran too much fuel "read smoke" with out the egt gauge and melted his motor.

if you are reading smoke in headlights at night... heres the thing I can see NO smoke during daylight nor can someone following me BUT at night I can see particles in their headlights but they don't see them either... Night smoke is deceiving. Get a gauge is the only way to tell if it's too much... I bought one for $90 complete kit with 12ft wires... it's not that expensive.

Try running some biodiesel, 20-40% won't hurt anything but tailgaters will keep their distance

You should stop turning more when you can smokes in constant driving, a nice smokecloud when hitting the pedal is ok :)

I don't have an EGT gauge, I turned the max fuel screw until I couldn't bring my idle down to normal no matter how much I turned out the idle screw.  That's when I stopped.

yea you may have a little more smoke room, but dont  push it too much without an egt(heavier loads make it rise faster,so dont drag race flat out up a  steep hill) ask rabbittree when he blew the head gasket right out the side of the block on my old jetta on a test drive(he felt bad,i said shoot it woulda been me,and i laughed)4th gear, almost wound out going for 5th,BANG,push in the clutch, game over(this was at about 80 mph too)
Throttle cables ftw

I like to keep it under 1250-1300 F sustained, and 1500-1550 F peak. Though for "short" bursts I have wrapped an 1800 F gauge...

that is 1" off of the head right (getting those temps?) or is that 1" after the turbo?

I ran 1300F for several minutes (measurement 1" off of the turbo) with no ill effects everyday I drove a 84 TD last summer on all kinds of fuel with 270k on the original block when I started and sold it with 290k

I haven't messed with the fuel on my '85 Vovo, and it sometimes hits 1400 at the probe 1/2" upstream of the turbine inlet.  I am going to do a supporting mod or 2 beffore I touch the screw.  With the MBC pushing boost to 14PSI, temps havent chaged appreciably, and I have very little smoke when in the boost.
I thought this article provided a fair overview:

and I keep drooling over their Dmax project....

Frankley, Smoke is WASTE!! It's power you COULD'VE HAD if you had more air in there! If it smokes, STUFF MORE air in there! If you can't get anymore air in there, YOU'RE DONE!
