1.9D in Caddy (like Rabbit I) 1.6D?
« on: September 01, 2004, 10:49:09 am »
Has anyone had any experience in putting a 1.9D like from a Passat 1988-93 in a Golf/Rabbit I? I have a Caddy myself and would love to put in a somewhat newer and more performant engine. Problem is, the swap shouldn't be visable since it wouldn't pass our yearly 'technical controls' (i'm from belgium). My current engine is kind of 'end of life', so it's time to put in a new one anyhow. If anyone has any idea, please tell me if the swap would cause any difficulties, and which ones. Thanks guy's!

Thank's Caddy!
Did you have any conversionproblems? Can I fit the original exhaust for example and can I use the original engine-mounts?

Merci Caddy!
Avez vous eu des problèmes avec la cenversion? Est-ce-que je peux mettre l'echappement original? Dois je modifier les pattes de fixations du moteur, ou est-ce-que je peux monter les originels sur le 1900? Je vous mercie d'avance!

I have done 3 Caddies with 1.9 IDI (in USA)

for NA exhaust I use early (pre-'81) factory double down pipe, with 16mm spacer at manifold to down pipe connection.  I hear you can use a later model exhaust from 8v 2.0l gas (taller engine)  but 'header' (tubing) fatigues with diesel vibration

Use a bit of hammer on timing belt cover(around pump gear), and 16mm offset bracket for center bolt on same

That's about it.  Ez swap ~6-8 hrs

How much for 1.9's in your area?

In US we get 'New' long block for $2000USD
We have no used source, as 1.9IDI engines only went to Canada for NA market

in europe we have a lot of 1.9idi ( na or forced ) but the probleme is the crankshaft puley who 's not very strong .
the aaz motor is very hard to found in a scrap, lot of them are broken.
the price for this engine is about 800 eur , with 100 000 km.
but lot of people ( vw addict ) prefere to fit a tdi .
a new ( rebuilt ) bloc is about 1800 eur, no pump no turbo of course.

( 1 us$ = 0.82 eur )

I already wish to thank you all for your replies. It really helped me decide.

I Bought the 35 I Passat engine rather cheap (400€). I Just switched the clutch with the one of the 1600 to fit the gearbox. Now I still have to put the engine mount from the 1600 on the 1900 and I'm going to exchange the inlet and outlet collectors too. While at it I'll try to exchange the 'oliekeerring' (arrr 'le borage' how is this in english again...?? I'm native dutchspeaking, you know :-) ) because there's to much oil around the belt. This will be a busy weekend. If anyone has anymore info about whatever difficulties I might encounter, I thank you in advance.

might want to consider replacing the crankbolt while engine is out.

I use a high temp, high strength, 'permanent' (non removing) thread sealant (Loc-tite)  and either block the crank (with pan off) or use my custom flywheel with 1+m bar welded on for obtaining proper torque.  Folks have mentioned doweling or wiring this bolt to pulley.  You could be very creative and make a 'nest' that would use pulley bolts to secure head. (I might try this)

I think you will be very happy with this engine, and for a very good price!

What model year is your caddy?  (mine is 1980 )

janb, my Caddy is from 1983. Here in Europe this was the first year they build them. This weekend, the engine was put in and sunday just before midnight I turned the key and could listen to the gentle rumbling of my 1900 IDI Caddy! Now friday, I'll bring him to the VW-service shop, to verify the injection pump and the belt tension. Altough this morning I encountered a little problem due to a forgotten detail. After driving 2 day with it, my engine didn't turn like it should. When I looked at it, I saw plenty of air bulbs passing the tube to the injection pump... That will be the first thing to do this evening.
