AAZ Wastegate Accuator Question

I have an AAZ engine of unknown origin.  I am installing it in my Samurai and don't have anything except the engine.

My questioni s, "What is the purpose of the forward most vacuum line to the wastegate accuator, and where does it connect"?  The rear line connects to the other side of the turbo housing, but the front one has a very long hose and I can't find a point to connect it  :(

I think that line connects to the LDA (fuel enrichment device)

That line connects to the EGR system to pull the wastegate open during EGR operation. Golf and jetta engines don't have a complete EGR system anyway, so you won't need it. Only the passat actually had a complete EGR system. Do not plug the hose, it needs to be vented to atmosphere, a short length of hose will help keep the dirt out.

Thanks for the responses.  I'll slip some sponge material in a short piece of hose and call it good then.

I did put a vacuum pump on that hose last night and pulled 25-inches of mercury and the wastewgate still didn't open.  With a gentle push from me in addition it did, but I was surprised at how much vacuum it took.  Does that sound normal to you?

With a bit of boost on the other side of the diaphram the wastegate opens alot easier. The wastegate might also be a little sticky from sitting. It seems to take about a week for them to seize up solid... You might want to work it back and forth a few times to be sure its free.

Thanks.  Never thought of the boost on the other side.  And this engine has been sitting at least 5 years, so it must be quite stiff  :shock:

 If its been sitting in the sunny south its probably not too bad. 5 years in Santa Rosa is probably comparable to 1 week of winter here in Canada, wet and salty...

 A little penetrating oil will help dissolve the rust, it'll burn off as soon as the engine runs, so use something that smells nice, like WD40. Nothing stinks like burning liquid wrench...

Lucky for me, it has been covered, on an engine stand, in a garage for all that time; just waiting for someone to love it  :D
