Ya I saw that posted on teh TEX a while ago, crazy fast. Sounds like trouble waiting to happen to me.
Have you ever found a link to see the mods that he did?

Wow...that is impressive!
Peak numbers are...
(Absolute?) manifold pressure of 1.96 kg/cm3 (28.0 psi)
Peak RPMs of 7500. Sounds like a 4-valve...my 8-v non-crossflow will rev to 8000, but it doesn't sound that smooth.
Max speed of 305 kph (189 mph). In a 77 Rabbit? That takes some major stones...
I too would like to know what kind of mods he's done!

pretty sure 16v turbo on that one... its the silver 77?
i've always called speedo calibration into question but if its accurate,
even if it isn't accurate, very impressive.

Yeah, good point about the speed. I used
this calculator to get an idea of top speed. With the 155-70-13 tires which came stock on a '77 Rabbit, along with the base FN trans, it calls for a top speed of 262 kph/161 mph. If I bump the tire size up to the 205-55-14 commonly fitted to the first-gen GTI, I get 277 kph/172 mph. If he slipped in an FO with its slightly taller 5th gear, he could get up to 297 kph/184 mph with the bigger tires.
If he swapped in a set of stock 2002 TDI wheels with 195-55-15's, he bangs out a 304/189 top speed! Of course, now we come to the hp-required equation, where I think he falls short. I don't recall the drag coefficient of the '77 Rabbit, but cars of that era typically need about 500 hp to get to 200 mph. I doubt that a 1.8 or 2.0 can haul that drag bucket up that high.
The most I've seen from streetable (road raceable - not drag cars) 1.8T's is about 350 hp, and that's with a dry sump and lots of go-fast dollars spent on it. In a barn door like a Rabbit, that might be good for close to 150 mph, but 190? I really doubt it.
Just my 2 euro-cents...

I can guarantee you he isn't using an 020 gearbox. At the least it's probably an 02A or an 02J, but I would look to an 02M (6 speed) to try and get that kind of power down. As I recall the car was in fact a 16v turbo and ~500hp is totally doable if you're not trying to make an endurance racer. These engines can take a serious beating if only for short periods of time. Sustained power output like that may very well toast the engine.
Even still...189 mph (or anywhere close) is quite the insane move in a Rabbit. I've never had a Rabbit over about 120 mph and it can get a bit shady up there. He must have done something to improve the aerodynamics considerably.

Someone on a forum mentioned that the Rabbit's windshield can implode at certain speed. Can anyone confirm that?

Holy Cow!
You crazy Finns must have lots of time on your hands during those long, dark winters, eh?
I just hope your cops don't catch him at 300+ kph. I hear you have some drakonian speeding penalties in your country.
