1.6 TD buildup
« on: May 07, 2006, 10:49:23 pm »
I am getting ready to rebuild a 1.6 TD to go in my Caddy.  A few questions for the more experienced out there:

I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area. Does anyone know a shop on the US west coast that specializes in VW diesels?

What are the pros & cons of the solid vs hydro lifter motors?

I want to build this as a performance engine. Without breaking the bank to squeeze every last bit of power out of it. what kind of HP / torque should I expect to get from a 1.6 TD with an intercooler?

As far as power for dollar, what are the most recommended mods?  GTD injectors? Giles pump? Head work?  Turbo upgrade (what kind is best?)?

Does anyone have experience with propane injection on these engines?

I've seen some talk about swapping on gasser intakes.  Does this help at low or higher RPMs?  Which intakes are best?

Anything else I should know?  This is my first diesel buildup, so I want to take advantage of the group's experience.

Any input appreciated!!

Thanks

Wow.  155 views and NO replies?

Ummmmmm, OK, easier question:  Can anyone post specs of what mods they've done to get some serious power out of a 1.6TD?

Still looking for any leads to anyone on the US wast coast that knows how to rebuild these engines right.

Thanks!!

You're getting no replies because it's apparent to everyone who reads the posts that you haven't done due diligence with the Search Function for this forum.  People spend allot of time documenting & photographing their work and putting all of that info comprehensive threads in these forums.  It's an insult to ask someone to regurgitate it for you in a Cliff's Notes format in YOUR thread instead of just doing the search and reading it in THEIR threads.

The info gather process is time consuming, but what would you expect, trying to wring out every bit of power from a 20 year old platform?
