• golfs up until 1999 (AFAIK) were all IDIs. TDIs started after that. good luck in the hunt.

• 98 was the first year for tdi's in the golfs.

  There aren't any OEM A3 IZ/AHU Golf TDI's in North America.
  Well, actually, there were rumours of a few ie<10, but even if true, good luck ever finding/seeing one.
  A3 Golfs are AAZ IDI.
  A4 Golfs (99.5 & newer) got ALH TDI's.
  
  The beetle got the A4 ALH engine in 98, a year sooner than the Golf & Jetta because it used the A4 platform right from inception.
