The engine on my 88 Jetta TD was rebuilt 15,000km ago. The cylinder head is original, has 400,000km on it, and has never been rebuilt. The car currently uses about 1/2 litre of oil every 3000km or so. The engine does not leak oil anywhere (the underside is completely dry, no drips or runs at all). When I start the engine I get a puff of smoke and then no more. During normal use and acceleration it does not smoke at all. Is it normal for these little high compression diesels to use some oil, or (as I suspect) are the valve seals probably bad and that is where the oil is going (into the cylinders and out the tailpipe during startup). Any opinions? It's not too expensive to keep filling it with oil, just kind of annoying after the engine having been rebuilt and all.
