I have a 75 amp alternator in my 84 Quantum 1.6L TD which is on it's last leg after 470k miles. not a bad run... but I thought that with the fast glow plugs drawing more current than the original ones that maybe I shoud get a bigger alternator while I'm at it. I can't seem to find any posts on this partly because it won't take numbers in the search field.
Is there a 90 amp alternator that will drop in place of the current 75? I'm not that familliar with other years and you never know what might fit.

Does yours have a/c? I have an alternator from a Quantum TD at home that I thought was 90 amp. I can check.

yes, I have AC. Based on my recent parts searches I didn't think 90 amp was an option till a few years later.
I suppose that primarialy I need to determine IF it will fit. It's easy to find a 90 amp alternator for other cars. But I can't tell if they will fit...
Interesting... I just looked at the 1985 Quantum and it lists a 90 amp alternator at
www.rockauto.com
but nothing just comes right out and says that the 90 amp will fit on the 84. They're probably afraid of it burning up the smaller wires on the 84 that wasn't made for it.

Moved to Upgrades, non engine related. Not IDI engine / power enhancement related.

Maybe I should order one from my local parts store for an 85 and just see if it fits. I don't want to do any grinding though.

If there is a good local rebuilder, lots of time they can rebuild it to a higher output. We used to do that with Toyota alternators on 4x4s because an aftermarket upgrade was like $300.
