Is the 1.9 engine noisier than 1.6 N.A

I'm looking at purchasing a 94 golf 5dr with a 1.9 T diesel.  The car is straight and seemingly in good shape for it's mileage (270K) The one thing I noticed was that this car has a louder "Diesel noise" than my 91 golf w/1.6n/a.  Alos the timing advance doesn't seem to do anything.  It works to the back of the IP but that's it.  Suggestions on how to troubleshoot this are much appreciated.  Any suggestions?

sounds like the injection pump timing might be advanced a hair?

Will this cause a problem?  Is it a hard adjustment?  This type of stuff in completely new to me being a gasser previously.  I don't have my manual for the 1.6 with me but I'll have a look tonight.  Is the adjustment different from the 1.6?  I ask because I don't have a manaual for the 94.

I don't know that the timing method is different on the 1.9vs1.6 but I do know that for the 1.6 turbo or not  you need a VW specialty tool that screws into the IP and has a dial indicator on it Your new bently will outline the proceedure.

I wonder if the 1.9 will use the same injector pump? I know the 1.6NA & 1.6TD use diferent pressures in the injection system, the turbo being higher. So the injectors are set to open at a higher pressure on the turbo
I don't think things ar interchangable  without adjustment if they are at all

some guys swear by the dial indicator, others swear by adjusting it 'by feel'. mine is advanced pretty far and there have been no issues.

So, the million dollar question is can I drive the car this way 'till I can get it fixed or is it going to get worse and eventually cause damage?  
I haven't bought this car yet but I'm 98% of the way to committing to it.  I need to know what I'm in for.   :?

IMHO: if it IS just an advanced pump, i'd drive it. however, it could be something else. i'd have someone knowledgable take a look before i put too many km on it.

Is there a fail-safe, easy enough way for the DIY'er to troubleshoot this to eliminate other possibilities?

if you want to do it yourself and you want to be sure, i'd find a dial indicator and follow the instructions that have to be in a thread on this forum somewhere.
