to turbo or not to turbo???
« on: April 18, 2006, 05:17:51 pm »
I have a 91 1.6 N/A in a golf w/o ps or Air.  I would like to rebuild my engine and finally get rid of its runaway issues.  Can I get a rebuilt 1.6 T that will drop in or will there be a lot to change/purchase???   My thinking is I could sell my rebuilt engine to recoup costs.....I love this little car.  It's light and handles well (it will again once I get those stupid axel bushing changed!! :?  :D )  She just needs more guts.
Help please.
Out.

1.6TD - cheapest of the vw turbo diesel options, tunable, reliable, enough balls when tuned. i would steer clear of turboing the NA 1.6 unless you plan to work in oil squirters somehow...or keep the boost really low and your eye on an EGT gauge.

1.6TD should fall right in there with minimal fuss. items you will have to change... airbox, downpipe, possibly fuel filter mounting but i'm not sure on a mkII.... as far as electronics and sensors go... it should be a breeze.
