1.9D performance gain question
« on: August 21, 2004, 04:40:55 pm »
Hello everybody, i'm new here. I live in belgium where i'm happy cruising with my mk3 golf from the year '92.

Inside there's an 1Y engine that's just received a new head gasket. Now i'm looking for give it a little more juice @ the performance side.

I already contacted a firm in Belgium where they would tune the dieselpump. With a little modification inside and soms testing on the bench they say i should see a performance increase from 64 stock to 72 hp. And of course a gain in torque.

That is step one

I don't know if there is a catalysator on my car, if there is there should be the possibility alsow to replace that and have a little gain.

That is step two (if there is a cat, don't know how it may look)

Can you give me extra hints about tuning this little fellow?

Other tailpipe modification's? What about playing with the compression ratio or polishing inside the engine? Or is this a dangereous thing?

Placing a turbo is not an option.

Please help and thank you very much

I will post pics as soon as i have done a little modification

Nice looking car.

Regarding what to do, you should bump up your revv limiter some.  Check out how your hp curve keeps increasing up high; well bumping your revv limiter up will continue to make it increase and give you more usable power in the upper range.  Someone here has revved a 1.9lTD up to 6500rpm before so the stock range of what the motor can safely do is very conservative.  I don't know a whole lot else about this motor, but do focus on the exhaust system, you want long runner "tri Y" style header for best performance, like on a performance tuned naturally aspirated gas engine.  Since 2" diameter exhaust piping seems about right on a 1.6lNA, you probably would want about 2.25" diameter piping on a 1.9l NA I'd suppose.  Let us know how it turns out!
