Oil cooler, fitting longer Passat threaded tube union
« on: March 20, 2017, 08:17:52 am »
So I acquired the larger Passat heat exchanger 028117021E to put on my AAZ. Question is, the longer threaded pipe 028115721B that holds it down, how long should it be? I'm not finding any mention of a length anywhere on the internets. I have one that is 85mm, but it fits too short to even work well and still screw a filter on. Before I take the thing apart, only to find out I am stuck, I'd like to verify the union is long enough. Does anyone have one laying around that they can measure for me?

I put the even larger 0308117021B water-to-oil, and vice versa,  heat exchanger on my 1.6L VNT turbo engine.   I took the old threaded pipe, and another stock one to my local welding shop and had them cut the apart and lengthen to the new longer size (difference of old vs. new coolers height).    Extended the water lines and it works perfectly...never over 230F oil temperature in the pan, even with running it hard in the mountains.

I also bought a few seals, 038117070B to go between the oil housing and cooler.   I think I'll switch to using the shorter Wasserboxer oil filter
to make filter changes easier.
