Fuel system leaking down
« on: October 23, 2016, 01:51:15 pm »
My 81 rabbit with AAZ transplant engine and a newer style fuel filter with a CAT filter (seen on tdi engines). I recently started to have an issue where the fuel seems to leak down and get air into the filter area. I have a hand primer bulb online before the filter and once I pump it things stay fine until it sits again for a couple days. If I run without repumping the hand bulb it barely runs and will die and not have power. Once I pump all is fine. Where do I start? No external leaks at all.

How is the gasket on the return line going into the filter? Can get some leaks there when they get old.

Clear line coming from the pump will let you know if air is leaking in around the small injector lines.
I see air at the filter output. Any air at the front of the pump?

On the bottom of the banjo, I see 2 copper washers stacked against each other. That is not normal practice and could be where air is getting in.

I also just noticed the hose coming from the hand pump to the filter is a larger diameter then the filter nipple. That might be your issue? Maybe try running it without the hand pump and a proper diameter hose? or try replacing the hoses coming from the hard lines under the car to the filter?
