Did I get an AAN?
« on: July 27, 2016, 12:54:22 pm »
Hello, all!

I just bought a new truck (81 Rabbit), and it was supposed to have a 1.6TD swap.

There were a few things that looked ... off, but I didn't put the pieces together until after I had the truck.
I am pretty sure it's an AAN, based on the weird valve cover, different IP, and the serp belt for the alternator. Can anyone confirm?
If so, it's my lucky day!

As an aside, I am stealing some parts from my old truck to make this one better. As I understand, the 1.6TD boost pin (in the LDA) is a very worthwhile upgrade for those of us who like more power. I have a 1.6TD pump on my old truck, but can I just swap the boost pins? Do I need to swap LDA covers as well? The other truck is just an NA diesel, so it's not even using the LDA. I'm pretty sure it won't miss the boost pin. But, I want to make sure that the 1.6NA can run with the TD pump, and AAZ boost pin. Are there other parts I should scavenge or swap? It has a set of Giles rebuilt TD injectors, but I understand AAZ injectors are pretty much the best, correct?

For some reason, I can't embed the link.

Awesome!

Thanks so much for the reply! I actually got lucky for once!

Anyone else able to answer the boost pin question?
Can I just toss the boost pin from the AAZ into the MF pump?

I'm pretty sure you just swap the pin, spring and cap as the pins are different lengths.

Aaz pin on the n/a shouldn't matter as there's no boost to push the pin down and take advantage of the system, it should run as any other n/a pump in that situation from my understanding.

Good score! Get a egt gauge and have fun!

Thanks man!

Yeah, I still have my VDO EGT / Aircraft spruce thermocouple from my last car. I'll be installing that soon.

LOL. I just realized I brain farted and made the title "did I just get an AAN?"

That's a very different engine. I have one in my 1995 Audi S6. I love that engine. 215k miles, 27PSI. good times.
