lukitas,  My "timing kit" is composed of several high tech objects de art and not really tools at all.

For that slot in the back of the cam you need to have the right sized piece of metal that will secure the cam against the top of the head.  I use a 3.5 inch Stanley Door hinge, folded and shimmed with a feeler gauge.  It goes in deep and the rest of the flat rests on the top of the block.  Way tech, Cost about 4 bucks and serves me well.

For the IP we need to keep the internal tension of the pump that is being placed on it at TDC from the internal springs from moving it one side or the other.  Some use a deep socket of the same diameter as that hole in the front of the pulley and then slides through the IP bracket.  I find another high tech tool to be useful here.  A carriage bolt, one of those that has the square behind the rounded head on it.  I use a 3/4 inch diameter one it is ever so slightly loose but I get really close to TDC with it.

Now for taking up the slack on the tensioner pulley I use my hand, how novel is that?  I find I can get it snug and then position my fingers behind it on the belt and just push on it and check the tension between the cam and IP with my right hand and when good I push a a long pre-positioned box wrench, 13 mm and it is tight.  Then I go back up to the cam and tighten it.

Do I count on the door hinge to hold it tight?  Not one bit.  I use a pair of vice grips on the cam itself positioned on the cam in between the  two first lobes.  No marring of those delicate surfaces.

Timing also requires a gauge that goes into an adapter on the back of the IP.  That is one part that I did buy off Ebay, this forum or someplace like that.  There is no substitute for it.  Well that isn't the truth there as we also have different electrical devices we use but now you are talking rare or old and pricey.  Not what you want to do.  But I did and it is almost as much work as the accepted practice described in the Bentley.

I've seen the timing tools for sale on craigslist before
  for example:

Hand tight is perfect for the belt tensioner - makes it hard to get it over tight and ruining your injection pump and intermediate shaft bearings.    If you get is too loose, just try again.    Just be sure to rotate the tensioner the right direction,  it can go either way.

That kit listed is not a bad buy actually.  I have that gauge, or at least the baby blue case.  Nice and clear numbers.  The other parts look solid enough to do the job as well.  And only  50 not 150 bucks.

Buy it up!

How dumb is that?   I bet he could wrap it up in bubble wrap and get it into one of those $6.45 USPS envelopes and you would have it in a week.  Some CL people just don't try at all to help the buyer.

Too bad my brother is way out in Orlando.  He would ship it.

Doesn't matter how it's done,
It's the end result that matters....

it doesn't seem to be the worse for wear with my cam timing arrangement....
That said, I didn't need a dial gauge to set timing....

Some tools are definitely better than others.  I prefer my timing... and prefer not to cut myself.
