I have an 85 Golf with a 1.9L N/A of some sort. He started out with a N/A 1.6, but a few years ago a shop installed a 1.9 crate motor. My problem is that nowhere on the block or head is any markings that show what engine code it is. I've done a lot of research, and it looks like it's either a 1Y or AAZ.
Heres what went in:
Here's what came out:
The intake manifold and exhaust manifold were switched over from the 1.6, but a Bosch VE pump was installed after it was built by Giles.
This engines runs totally fine, but soon I'm going to completely dismantle the car for restoration and would like to add a small turbo for some extra power. I'm not looking for a lot as this setup already keeps up with traffic just fine.
So my questions start here. I've done some researching and found other people with the same engine, but my problem is I don't know how to tell if it is an AAZ without a turbo or 1Y. I think the US did not get the 1Y, but the shop that installed the engine years ago said it was from a 91 Jetta Ecodiesel. Is there a way I can tell if it's an AAZ or 1Y based on parts/design? Again, no markings on the engine, like at all and the shop it was done at was no help. Since the swap several years ago, I became an Audi technician but I really don't know much about the old school stuff.
It's definitely an AAZ/1Y head at least. The 91 came with a 1.6, never a 1.9.
Functionally the AAZ and 1Y internals are pretty darn close to identical. I think I remember reading that the 1Y had piston squirters and everything just like the AAZ. You can yank the pan to check - if it has the oil cooling squirters then you can treat it basically as a turbo motor. If not you can still turbo it but keep the EGTs a bit lower.

right behind the dial indicator on the first pic on the block is where a code would be
1y is basically the same thing, the only real difference is that the rods are longer, the wrist pin is higher in the piston, but it has the same bore and stroke, and has oil squirters
How is the oil return line configured at the block?
