96 Passat to vanagon

I've got a dead 1.6 in a vanagon that I think I have a solution for. I just made a deal on a 1996 Passat with a 1Z. Good engine 5 speed. 165,000 miles.
I'm thinking range rover IP.
1Y intake and exhaust. 70 HP is all I'm looking for.
Stupid idea?

I think you might mean Land Rover IP rather than range rover. What you propose will work and certainly be a big step up from the 1.6 non-turbo. 70 HP in a vanagon is fairly minimal, IMO. I'd use the turbo and intercooler.

Thanks for the input. I've been back and forth about what engine, what turbo or not all winter. I'd be happy with it if the 1.6 was still working.
The turbo that's on the Passat is tiny. Is there any chance its a K03?
I assume when the LR pump is used the stock vw injectors and fuel lines are used also. Correct?

The LR pump is going to put out more than 70 HP unless you turn it way down... :-)
The stock turbo on a 1Z is similar in size to a K03 but it's made by someone else. Has about the same capabilities.
Yep you use the stock injectors and fuel lines. You need to swap the delivery valves from a VW pump over to the LR pump or the injection lines won't fit. Alternatively you can bend the lines but there's some risk of them cracking or getting kinked.

Running the 1Z non-turbo (1Y intake and exhaust) will probably be a bit less than 70hp.

Tuesday I get the car, it's a sweet runner. Michigan car 20 years old, cancer gets'em.
I'm going to order the pump, get the intake and exhaust to run it. The Passat becomes a mule.
Can't wait

hi Bravo,
I'm doing the same thing with my 82 Diesel Westy... my 1.6na is still doing great and I LOVE it... but I need to get from DC to Yellowstone National Park (~5K mile round trip) at a speed slightly over my current cruising speed of 47MPH, so I'm swapping in a 1Z out of a 96 passat. I plan to keep the turbo and also do a mechanical pump... I'm hoping to get MORE than the stock 1Z 90HP by adding bigger injectors. (in essence I'll be doubling the HP of my old 1,6)
Let's keep in touch... maybe we wont have to reinvent the wheel on this swap!
Regards,
Steve

Your on!
I just brought the Passat home, we had a big snow yesterday. I've been waiting for some decent weather, my garage isn't heated.
Next step is order the pump
