Mk1 OEM turbo diesel production numbers??
« on: December 16, 2015, 10:47:37 am »
Hello everyone, im not new to the mk1 or vw world. Ive owned 4 diesel mk1's  3 caddys and a rabbit. Recently purchased a 1983 Jetta TD COUPE  wondering if anyone has exact info. I know most TD in the US were offered in 1983. The body is in great shape, interior will need some attention. My buddy is the second owner for last 4 yrs, his  wife is having a kid so i got the car. :-)

To my knowledge based on a 1983 sales brochure i have turbo diesel was offered as a JETTA GL model. I love this coupe  its my second mk1 jetta coupe that i have owned and only the 3rd 1.6TD ive ever seen!

Currently own:
1983 Rabbit GTi ( for last 14yrs)
1990 Jetta Coupe 2.0 swap.
1983 Jetta Coupe TD

Thanks!

thats an extremely rare mk1.  very few td coupes were made, i think especially since most of them were higher trimmed gl cars, and most people getting a gl probably wanted a 4 door.   you could get a turbo diesel in a gl or a base model, i have badges for both.

Factory Rabbit TD equipped cars only had a run of about 500 for 83 and 84.
Approximately 80 for 83 and approximately 400 for 84.

Jetta Coupe TD equipped cars production can't be much more...

I also had a 83 Jetta Coupe TD.
I have seen only around 5 or 6 Coupe TDs

Not much help, but it may give you a baseline....

maybe those numbers are only for a rabbit, since td rabbits are quite uncommon,  i have seen many many mk1 jetta turbo diesels, enough to think they have made more than just 900 in total

really?  ive seen only a few.  i personally would think jettas and coupes are more rare them not being westmoreland.   my bros info thru vw  states the car was shipped from germany and had to be special ordered.  🏻

I also talked to a friend in Germany recently and asked him about Mk1 Coupe TDs. He said he hasn't seen many over there either...
So it is rare to find them over there also.

Nice looking Jetta TD sir!! Had one same color!!

Don't know how many of these cars they made either. I know mine came from the factory with the 1.6td and the three speed auto, and I've been told that would have been a special order only car. PO blew the turbo motor and replaced it with a NA 1.6 but that's not a big deal as I already have the mTDI (and a 5-speed) ready to swap in. But in its current state it gives new meaning to the word 'slow'!  :(

If it doesn't fit force it. If it breaks it needed replacing anyway!

It's pretty clean, just a couple of dings on the passenger door. Could probably get away with just painting that door, but I'm not really keen on that color. Have been thinking of something else but then the blue interior would look stupid, so I might be stuck with the blue and a total paint job to make it all match.  Found this cluster on German Ebay.

BtW   Thats a mk2 diesel cluster ce2 to be exact.     oh wow well  that car is worth more with original color and decals.  it wont be original ever again.

never repainted my gti   14yrs later im glad.  i never see original pain un restored ones.  trust me you are better off.

I agree with "worth more..." but like I said I have a 1.9mTDI on the bench and ready to install along with a 5-speed.  The PO replaced the original 1.6TD with a normally aspirated engine and with the 3-speed auto it's practically undrivable anywhere but in the city.
