16d 1.6d what the heck
« on: April 06, 2006, 10:58:30 pm »
My friends dad bought a turbo diesel motor, which is supposedly from a 85 jetta td.  but i noticed on the back of the block it says 16d, not 1.6d.  and i told him i heard it's not a real td if it says 16d, because all i had heard that all td's said 1.6d. but then i read more on this site and saw that supposedly 16d meant it was a 11mm motor, and 1.6d meant it was a 12mm.  so my friends dad took his valve cover off, and it had the 12mm head bolts.   and it definetly has a 12mm head because the oil drain on the front is big, and we compared it to an 11mm head he had laying around.  it also has the oil cooler, and basically everything about the motor is turbo diesel, accept on the back it says 16d. it has him a little worried, does anyone have any more information

That's normal.Some were marked D,some marked TD.I just re-ringed a 92 TD,but the block said 1.6D.It had a turbo,oil squirters,BOV,oil cooler,etc right from the factory.

yeah, i didn't know any of them said td.  but i've read that 11mm engines say "16d" and 12mm engines say "1.6d".  and if it's an 11mm, it's definetly not a real td.  we're gonna pull the oil pan and find out, unless someone can confirm it's a true td.

so his dad took the casting number off of the block and called the local vw dealer, they told him it's the block from an 83-84 mk1 turbo diesel, either a rabbit or a jetta.  which leads me to believe the guy he bought it from was confused on what year jetta it came out of.  but also leads me to believe that the "1.6d" and "16d" castings have nothing to do with the motor, aside the motor being pre 83, and post 83.  this is because i have seen an 84 turbo diesel motor that  said "1.6d" on the back , which is an mk1 motor, but it still says 1.6d.  also, on my 81 jetta, i have a 12mm motor, which i am 100% sure about, but the back of the block says "16d"  so this further concludes my findings

and to some everything up

"16d" = any pre 1983 1.6l diesel block, 11mm or 12mm

"1.6d" = any post 1984 diesel block, which all of them would be 12mm, but not all would be turbo diesels.

clearly the confusion as to motors labeled "16d" all being 11mm would be relative to how all 11mm motors are labeled "16d".  but not all motors labeled "16d" are 11mm.  but all motors labeled "1.6d" are all definetly 12mm.

anyways, myth busted!

no it's the size of the head bolts, 1.5L's all had 11mm head bolts, then when vw upgraded to the 1.6, they kept the 11mm head bolts, but also kept some of the head gasket problems.  so then they upgraded to the 12mm head bolts which also have a different head, i think it's a 12point and the older ones are 6 point or something.

if you think that's confusing wait till you have to figure out which cylinder head to put on it.

Let me guess, it's a CY engine code? They seem to have carried over to some of the earlier MK2's.
