Maybe this is the right spot for this question.  My dad and I are pretty new to the whole VW diesel world, but we managed to salvage an 82 rabbit out of a field in Elkin, NC and get it running and that thing got me through nursing school getting 50mpg just about worn out!  So thats how the VW bug bit us.  We now have an 81 Caddy and dad put a 2000 TDI motor in it.  Unfortunately the pump was gone, so he put a spare 1.6 pump on it.  It will start and run but it drives REALLY slow.  Like not streetable at all.  So I see that there is talk earlier of a hybrid pump.  We have a 1.9 electronic pump available, just without the electronic controls to go with it. Can anyone give us some more specifics on what we need to get a functional mechanical pump so we can get this thing on the road?  Thanks so much.

Get a Land Rover 300TDI injection pump.  It is such a nice 99% bolt-in option for the ALH, that it makes so much more sense than trying to cobble together something.  It will also give better performance than a stock ALH pump.  Some details on what's needed to get it going are in this thread.

^^^ I second that advice.  The Rover pump is somewhat easy to find and is perfectly suited for the engine you have.  I have one on my AHU. :)

I currenty drive a AFN engine and JR pump combo which is not a rocket but gets me to 110 km/h if im patient  ;D

While putting this swap together most people said it wont be streetable, which is your case. I wonder whats different.

I also get excellent mpg due to the difference in pump / injector pressures, 4.3L / 100km, thats 66 mpg.

Still, I have a LR Discovery pump laying on the shelf though, which ill swap in once i have enough free time.

If using US gallons (as opposed to imperial), that works out to 55 MPG.  I would expect somewhere around there on a Mk2 with a TDI if it was well-tuned and driven reasonably.  I used to get 50+ MPG on the last Mk2 I owned and the TDI will fairly easily add 10% even with a proper mTDI injection pump.
