I was in FL on business last week and stumbled on it through a friend. The owner bought it new in Canada, came to the US to work (he is a port engineer) registered it in Chicago IL and got an IL title, them moved a year later to FL and was given a FL title, even denotes the vehicle is in KM's on title. Beats me maybe there was a loophole when he originally brought it over.

It's definitely a cool car and something different (especially in the states), but we did get TDI's....so if it were me I'd go that direction for that price. I'd have to agree though, it will go for that price or close to it.

1.9 IDI golfs are not THAT rare in Canada.  Definately would not get $10,000CDN for a 95 with 100,000k on it up here in Toronto, Ontario.  I still see them for sale occasionally in the auto trader.  That car here is worth around $3000-4000 CDN if it is certified and not rusty.   Would be worth more if it was a turbo.

Should be a turbo car, never seen a 1.9L NA up here in Canada. That car,if it's as clean as you say it is,could fetch $6500 or more to the right buyer. Most any MKIII 1.9L diesels will easily fetch $3500 or more in average shape with high miles.Clean cars with low K's fetch much more.

i agree with wyldman it should be a turbo... or else someone has changed things around.

have you seen what some people pay down there for a running 1.6NA rabbit? i've seen people pay "$3000-4000 CDN" for those.

Maybe not in Quebec:  http://www.vwquebec.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?t=25127 -93 1.9TD Jetta $1500
http://www.vwquebec.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?t=23788 - 1993 1.9TD Jetta, 290,000 km, $1750
http://www.vwquebec.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?t=23866 - 94 Jetta 1.9TD, 114,000km, $1500 negotiable
http://www.vwquebec.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?t=24908 - $1000 for a 94 Golf TD with 284,000km
http://www.vwquebec.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?t=23819 - 92 golf with 98 mechanical TDI 1.9 engine, $3000
http://www.vwquebec.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?t=20994 -96 Jetta 1.9TD, turbo shot, good motor, $1500
http://www.vwquebec.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21822 - 94 Jetta 1.9TD, $500 (yup, you read that right, $500)  apparently it runs but the transmission is shot
http://www.vwquebec.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14627 - 93 Golf 1.9 TD, 247,000km, $1800
http://www.vwquebec.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18151 - 1.9 Golf TD, $1500

And that's only the first five pages of classifieds (there are 10 pages in total)  To think that I managed to sell a 1988TD jetta with a bad engine block for $1000 in Ontario recently.  If people would take the trip to Quebec they would definately get the benefit.

You are right though, I couldn't find a single 1.9 IDI non turbo car for sale.  Perhaps they never made them.  Have to check on that.

they made NA 1.9s in europe... we just didnt get them.

hehe quebec is crazy when it comes to VWs and it seems they love their diesels over there... a lot of europeans there might explain it.

thats why i wonder how this FL car got registered in the US... a $2000 car in quebec could be a $8000 car just 24 hours drive south...

and worth $5000 in BC without any import hassles, but it would need an inspection.

What stops these cars from crossing the US border?  Free trade and all that, I thought the restrictions on importing cars were gone now, long as it met whatever standards.  Lady down the street just Ebay'd and imported a newish Volvo up from the states, saved a 3rd over local prices, she said.

Anyhow, wish I could get a 1.9 that cheap!

The 95 Golf IS a TURBO 1.9
« Reply #13 on: April 07, 2006, 06:22:28 am »
Sorry I didn't mention it in the original Post. I have had a 2000 Tdi Golf and this 1.9 TD will absolutely run away from it in performance.

Quebec is a completeyl different ball game than anywhere else in North America.  They have a HUGE supply of them.
I know a guy who sold cars all the time from Canada and took them to the U.S.   He Ebay'd a bunch of rare muscle cars.  He only got stopped at the border once in the 2 years that he was doing it.  He really didn't pay any border fee's.  He just lied about what it was worth.  I don't know the technicalities.
ANy who, I was in a band and we travelled all over North America.  We were in California once and our tranny died.  Our van wasn't worth keeping so we bought a 2000 Dodge Ram 3500 15 pass van for a steal of a deal.  We payed GST at the Canadian border and a fairly minimal export fee from the U.S.

wasn't too much hassle.
