FREE - Seats / Windows - 1981 Rabbit
« on: June 07, 2015, 08:47:42 pm »
Yup - FREE!  I have a bunch of stuff left over from the part out of a 1981 Rabbit from a few years back.  The little stuff isnt all that bothersome, but the big stuff has gotten to the point where I just want it all out of my way and am willing just to give it away...

Free Seats -
Both front seats and the rear seat.  The fronts are cloth, are in really good shape, and in need of good cleaning/vacuuming.  Their condition is really excellent for anyone completing a restoration.  The rear seat is vinyl and is also in good shape.  There 2 small tears (less than ~1/2") in the bottom portion, but aren't all that noticeable.

Glass and gaskets -
I have a full windshield gasket that doesnt have any dry rot, and was holding water just fine when I removed it from the car.  I also have both rear windows and gaskets as well (they are from a 2-door) , which are in great shape.

I just want these out of the way - so come and get it (my zip code is 14020).  If you're out of state, I can assist with packaging and shipment, but the cost is on you.  If I still have all of this stuff on 6/19, it goes out with the trash the following week - which I am reluctant to do, but cant stand it being in the way anymore...  Best way to reach me is to send a text message (five eight five - two three three - 7134).

I cant figure out how to post pics, so I'm trying a link back to Fred's TDI (if this doesnt work I can text pics to you)

Don't toss the windshield seal.
Is it one that needs the chrome strip?

I don't think so - if memory serves me correctly, it had a plastic strip that ran all the way around the perimeter to hold the windshield in place.  But I dont remember it being chrome.

WRONG! Always toss the windshield seal! They tend to leak no matter what you do sometimes and it is MUCH easier to break the windshield taking it out or putting it back in. Just cut the damn seal to take the WS out and replace it. They are only about $20 if you shop around.

I have heard the windshield seals are very hard to source. I actually wouldn't mind taking it off your hands if you could ship it.

When my glass got replaced, safelite just glued the new one in and had a molding around the windshield. No leaks anymore. no rubber seal.

If they didn't use the stock moldingl I'd worry about enough glue contacting the glass.
Universal trim covers too much of the glass, the body gets glued to the molding.

I've reused rubber seals many times.  Pulled the glass without breaking it, fixed rusty areas and no leaks when done.
You can tell if they are too brittle and cracked to reuse.
I would rather the rubber seal without the plastic insert, it's a pain to install.
