Modified 91 ECO Diesel
« on: April 04, 2006, 08:21:00 am »
Work, school, and a new house have severely cut into my 'project' time, and so the ECO has not been getting the attention it deserves. Since I bought it with the intention of doing a grease conversion and also improving the looks -- but have done neither, I figure I should see if there are any interested parties who might give her a better home.

I bought this from somebody on these boards last spring -- here is the old post: http://vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=1468&highlight=schrodiggity. The pictures still apply -- I will try to add some here if I can get my camera working, otherwire you might get some grainy ones from my phone.

Since then I have done the following repairs:

New heater core -- this was installed at K&A in Amherst, NY, as I did not think I could get it back together properly. They did a great job, and the heat is fantastic. The original core sprung a leak, like the A2's were prone to do.

New rear strut -- this was done to pass inspection, and was the only repair needed at the time (Early January).

Regular oil changes with Rotella-T.

Lately it has been giving me trouble with cold starts, and I think it may be related to the glow plugs. I don't have time to troubleshoot this anymore, and if it needs new plugs, I don't have time to do the job. Luckily, it has a block heater, so I've never been stranded, but I feel I should put it out here in the interest of full disclosure.

It's fun to drive, performs almost as well as the TDI I had, and gets over 40mpg consistently. I'd like to get $2000 for it.

Answers to common questions

I've had several folks asking the same questions, so I figured I'd answer them here for everyone's benefit.

The car is currently located in North Tonawanda, NY, zip code 14120. I did not purchase most of the parts included in the listing I referenced in my post. I did get some small interior parts, such as the rebuild kit for the shifter bushings.

The AC is disconnected, and would need (at least) a new compressor to work. This isn't really an issue in Buffalo, especially with the cool hand-crank sunroof providing extra breeze. Also, the power steering is currently disconnected (belt removed) because the pump needs to be replaced or rebuilt. This is an easy fix, but the previous owner preferred the stiffer steering, and I've grown to agree. The belt is included in the auction.

Smoke-wise, this is pretty typical for a diesel with 125k on it. There's a little white smoke at start, which goes away as the engine warms. There is also black smoke at WOT, just enough to see a little haze in the rearview. I like to pretend I'm spyhunter when I pass people.

For the folks wondering if it will drive a long distance, I would say yes -- though I am concerned that one of the rear tires is either unbalanced or has a loose radial. The tire was in front, and would cause some shaking over 55mph. When the rear strut was replaced, I had the suspension and bearings all checked out, and they deduced it was the tire causing the vibration, but didn't verify. I rotated the front tires to the back (X-pattern) and the vibration seriously lessened, and now I can only feel it over 65mph. None of the tires have any visible wear patterns or bulges.
