your 1.6 main is both main shell and thrust surface in 1, later they went to more pieces, shells and separate thrust 'ears'. your referring to the thrust main?

what i do is; when ready to take mains out with crank staying in, loosen all belts, timing and you may find it easier to take off water pump belt. you can now get top shell to rotate out, you can turn crank while pushing shell out. clean up, prep new bearings, prelube, etc, and get in. i always have at least two main caps snug, 3 if its sitting for overnight or so. when installing all bearings i make sure things are clean 1st, and the shells you can feel a 'tick' with your finger nail, so you now know the bearings will compress on each other. some type of gooey or like 50w oil finishes it up.((4prelube).

I do not believe that any of the 1.6TD engines came from the factory with the integral thrust main bearings.

Thanks all,i got the term "thrust washers"[4 parts] from the Vag 1991 manual for the cs,jx and ky engines,it says to re-use the big end bolt once only and to center punch the end of the bolt to indicate its been used twice.

That's definitely not correct.  '96?  That would be near the end of the AAZ run...  Maybe you meant to say '86.  Regardless, the change was earlier than that.  Aftermarket ones tend to be 1-piece but I have never seen a 12mm 1.6 ('82ish) or later with factory shells that were integral thrust.  I've even pulled apart an 11mm 1.6 (80ish) that had the separate thrust bearings.  As I said, I do not believe that ANY of the 1.6TD engines came from the factory with integral thrust bearings.
