Dunno if you guys have seen this:

http://www.yamaha-motor.co.jp/global/news/1999/03/23/super-diesel.html

What's interesting is the precombustion chamber. Our VWs have one hole placed and shaped to induce a swirl; this puppy has four to make the combusting air/fuel mixture out of the chamber more easily. Makes me wonder if we could machine some custom prechambers for our VWs using this idea.

The variable compression ratio is kind of cool, too.

It also makes about the same HP as our N/A 1.5D with 2/3 the displacement. I love 2-stroke diesels!

I've thought about a variable compression ratio system that would use a cylinder that could open or close and be real precise.  Problem is more parts to break :(  would definitely help cold starts though.   Maybe this motor will just be a 'drive it till its dead' type engine typical of yamaha motorbikes?

only thing i like about this motor.  don't have to worry about burning oil.  All they did was basically build on already existing technology developed by german engineering.  It seems as though they are taking a step back going with IDI and not TDI, but the infrastructure of the TDI motor is far greater for 3rd world countries.  The IDI motor could possibly make a come back, which would definitely benefit the world!

I'm sure our 1.6 diesels could get 3 mpg with enough research and development.  Just need to have nearly zero heat loss from the compression stroke to ignite the diesel fuel, and the lowered compression ratio.
