tranny/engine strength
« on: March 02, 2015, 12:41:11 am »
hi, new to the forum here, but poked around here for several years.
you guys seem to know the most of anyone about the idi diesels. most people throw these engines aside, but for me they fit the bill.

well, here's a bit about me. so I've got a 1998 mk3 with td 1.9. I bought the car originally because i'm a diesel mechanic and have access plenty of used fuel. ie, I can't remember the last time I've paid for fuel....
The idi engine is perfect for this as the fuel system is fairly 'crude' and doesn't mind some contaminants.

so I've got what I would call a mildly modified aaz. fmic, pump 1/2 turn from runaway, upgraded fuel pin, timing advanced substantially,  k14, full 2.5 inch custom exhaust with no mufflers ect, boost and pyro.
I want to take this thing to the next level but here's the dilemma. I want one of giles' pumps(I have one on my 4bt swapped ranger, which is close to 300 whp and 600 lbs/ft tq. and I absolutely LOVE it! Giles know's his ve pumps!) but currently don't have the money to swap the tranny to an o2a. my o2o seems in decent shape(aside from popping out of reverse from time to time) but I came across lots of people using 020's here. I was actually surprised. people with Giles' max performance pump too...
as you can imagine my clutch is slipping even with the modest power I have already. so I have to do the clutch anyway, but I don't want to install the clutch and then subsequently blast my tranny apart!
any thoughts on using 020's with say 140 whp 1.9?
if so then what sort of clutch? 110mm flywheel from a tdi and vr6 clutch is what giles suggested I run with an 02a, but will that work with an o20?

With an 020 the 210mm 020 flywheel and clutch is what you want. For 140hp I don't think you will even need anything more than stock. If you must I have a clutchnet red and it is nice but not town friendly. The 02a stuff is good but will not work on the 020

even the first stage clutchnet kit is probably enough if you're sticking with the k14, i got the yellow one in my aaz rabbit with larger t3 and honestly i think the pp is over kill, makes for a really heavy pedal, atleast in a mk1, mk3 has a nicer pedal set up.  if i were to do it again i'd probably get their green pp with a 6 puck sprung clutch disc.

take it easy on your shifts and 020 should be ok, if not they are very cheap to replace haha.
