WTB: Looking for Diesel Tools
« on: March 31, 2006, 09:48:36 am »
I need to do a head gasket on a 1.5L diesel and I cant justify spending $200 on the special tools when I will only need them once.

I am looking to either rent/borrow/buy a used set ... let me know if you can help out.

-2065A Diesel Cam Shaft Locking Plate
-2064 Diesel Injection Pump Lock Pin
-VA6015 Diesel Tool Used for accurate adjustment of Bosch diesel injection pump
-Metric or US dial indicator for the VA6015

pic of the 4 things i need:

You don't really need the pump locking pin (use a socket that fits snug),or if your going to time the pump anyways, just use your finger to make sure it's lined up with the hole.Cam locking plate isn't needed either, any piece of flat steel or angle iron that fits in the slot is good.

If you add your location to your profile, you may have better success in locating someone close to you who has the tools.

I have the stuff,but I don't loan them out.

You should be able to do the belt, and set the pump close without any special tools. Then drive it to a local shop and just have them set the pump timing.

I am located in southern california

I guess if all else fails, i will do as you suggested. I am trying to avoid going to a local shop....theres only 2 locally that i trust and only 1 of them knows these older motors...but hes always overbooked.

Try ebay for the timing tools.A lot of guys buy them to do the job once, and then sell them off.

I'd also consider buying just the dial indicator kit (www.vwdieselparts.com sells them),as it's handy to have. You can then play with the timing, and set it up for what is best for your car. Also handy for resetting every once and a while,as pump timing changes over time as the timing belt stretches. This will retard the pump timing.Once you become familiar with the procedure, you could do it for a few locals, and recoup the cost of the tools.Or find a few locals, and split the cost of the tool several ways.Still cheaper than paying a shop to do it.

I sourced my kit from ebay as well.  There's several people on there selling kits for around $75-100 or so that include the indicator gauge.  It's a foreign made (Asia) gauge, but I haven't had any trouble with it just yet.  In my auction, the seller even included a free pump lock pin as well.

Like you, I hesitated buying the tools, but now I'm very glad I did.  I've used it a few times now.

For the pump lock, I've seen a deepwell 11 or 12mm socket used and for the cam lock, I've heard of people using everything from hinges to big metal files  for that.

I've got the dial gauge and mounting sleeve/pin that you can buy.  It's the 'made in China' set up mentioned earlier that I ebay'd about a year ago-think I paid $80.  I since got a factory tool so this is just a backup.  Worked fine over a dozen times;gauge is standard reading.  I'll ship gauge and parts for $45.  Email for a pic. Just joined the forum and wondered if your guages and timing tools were still available?
