increasing boost on a garrett. Any more possible?

OK, I've done the fuel screw mod and uped the fuel on A 1.6TD. I have grainger valve on the large hose from the wastegate can to the boost side of the turbo housing. I can't seem to get more than 11-12 lbs of boost. How are you guys getting more than 12 lbs?
This particular turbo has two lines that come off the waste gate can. A small one and the larger one I have the granger valve on. The small one goes to the aircleaner side of the turbo housing where the intake impeller is.

Forgot to say I'm using a saab intercooler as well. Inlet and outlets are 2.25 inches with same size plumbed to turbo.

Yes, I took the BOV out and blocked it off with a freeze plug.

It is possible that the "smoke screw" needs some adjustment in the clockwise direction. You can get a turbo to *free float* that is, the boost will be controlled by the amount of fuel, and of course the size of the turbo will determine the boost pressure in that equation.
I sort of doubt that this is the case, but it can happen. It is more likely with larger turbos of course. Other details that will affect the boost are the air filter pressure drop, in addition to the exhaust system pressure increase/restriction, and of course charge leaks!

A good test may be to take a pair of licking pliers and a rag and crimp the wastegate hose temporarily while you take it for a spin. If boost increases then your Grainger valve isn't sufficient. If it does not, then you don't have enough exhaust heat (fuel) to creaste anymore boost. There is also the chance that the wastegate could be stuck so if you leave a trail of black smoke at 11 psi with the wastegate line crimped then you have a problem.

mygarret in my old 1.6td,used to bury a 30 psi guage HARD like 35psi or so,,,,i removed the kkk on my 84 td,and put ona garret from an 86 jetta,,i plumbed a " campbell hausfield mini shop air regulator" from home depot,tools section,about 15$,,,,,then i hooked it into the wastegate lines,ran them in the car,,ican adjust boost from inside car,,,,,if you hookit up backwards,and you shutoff,or choke the air supply to the wastegate,you may hear a hissing sound under boost,,,just reverse the hoses on the regulator,,,remember,,,shut off boost psi to wastegate,more boost,,,,,,the regulator is sensitive,i run with mine closed alot of the time, full boost,,,but the difference from stock boost to moonboost is about 1/2 turn on the regulator, and its turned almost all the way out,,good thing it isnt a wimpy gas engine,it woulda blownup by now,,,,,its like pinching,slowly,the boost sensing line,,,,,,,,you could try just disconnecting the boost sense line from the 'gate,and see if it goes 30psi on a drive,,,,if not,maybe feuling,or wastegate sticking,,but evenw/mine setupalmost stock,,it would go30 psi then too

Just so I understand, your only using the large hose from the waste gate to the turbo housing with the Home Depot regulator, right? Or are you also doing something with the little hose off the wastegate as well. There are two hose lines on my garrett, one big and one small.

yea mine has 2 lines too,,,the big one,,hookinto that one,,it s the one that hooks into the fitting/line up at the compressor outlet,,noi dont do anything with the small line,,,,,im not sure what they are doing there,but it goes to the compressor inlet,,picking up filtered air,iguess for venting purposes,but what idid on my tdi-m,was i reclocked the turbo,soit wouldnt hookup,iplugged the hole in the inlet,and hooked the little pipe to a plain small inline fuel filter,,so it breathes filtered air,,,yea that big line is like 3/8-10mm,,,,freakin spacebar is messed up drives me nuts :lol: i hooked new hoses at each end,i may have had to cut the hard line after removing it from the wastegate,so i could use it for a hose nipple,actually a few years ago,i had to remove the turbo,cause iwas tightening that fitting,and it broke right off!! :oops: :oops: ,,iremoved turbo,,mounted it in a vise, holding it upside down,and using a shopvac as i drilled,,and drilled and tapped for 1/8 npt,and put in a 3/8 inchhose barb,,,theres enoughmeat,,saved my butt,,,whew,,,hell you could use a ball valve and close it slowly,its way crude,but itll tellya if yer wastegate is ok,,,
