1.6D Alternator Problems
« on: January 15, 2015, 11:35:04 am »
Morning all. So about two months ago i replaced the alternator on my 84 1.6 diesel. Like i always do, i got it from
the parts store. It was a Bosch Reman " moterolla style " alternator. It was the direct " match " for my car in all of the books as
far as part # goes. Installed it, no problem. Went to put the belt back on and noticed that the pulley was a LITTLE bit different. It was actually ever so slightly larger. Only by a tiny tiny bit but made getting the belt on a NIGHTMARE. The next issue was that, where the single connector plugs to the back, i believe this is the W terminal?? The new alt. had this weird plastic shroud around it that i had to mangle to get my connector on as if it were meant to accept a different connector.

ANYWAY long story short. After months, its now literally crushing the V belt in half ( belt is now stretched and not too tight ), and causing it to slip on the alternator....not charging at any RPM over an idle. I want to get my hands on a rebuilt Motorolla OEM alternator How can i find one?? I went to partsplaceinc and they have TWO listed, descriptions are EXACTLY the same but the alternator photo they show looks different. anyone come into any of these issues before?

I suggest you take a moment and look at the offerings at Rockauto.com
The mask and the shot(s) are actually an IQ test. If you are wearing or circulating, you just failed the test. I can't feel sorry for you.

Do you have a picture of your replacement alternator?

for 1 thing the 1 alt in your link is a bosch, the other isnt.
do you by any chance have your original alt?? or remember what your pulley looked like. you can call pp and get a visual on alt.
i found keeping the pulleys when you core alt helps a lot. or get new pulleys from like napa and look at pic.
