The fitting for the atmospheric side has a small filter to keep dust out of the aneroid.  I would not recommend leaving it just open. 

Yeah, I installed a short piece of tubing that points downward but need to go back and add a filter.

Here's the fitting I used.  HTH

Fwiw, i finally asked giles about parts. He basically hinted that i should pay him to do the full tune up.

Which is what i figured he would do. Which is why i was looking for a non-giles supplier of parts.

Hey I think I have a 1.6TD parts pump, it has all the LDA parts in it still.  I'd be willing to part with the boost pin / spring / external fittings...
