• My motor (GTD) is all ready to slip into my Caddy, just a bit of paint needed in the engine bay first....
  
  Anyway before I paint it, I'm concerned that the air filter pipe will foul the filter in it's standard location.
  
  My caddy is a late model with the pre heated filter and bracket from the MK2 golf/rabbit.
  
  I can fit the bracket backwards and effectively move the filter round the strut until it is nealy touching the rain tray. Anyone know if this will work?
  
  If I have to relocate the filter entirely, I'd ratehr do it before the engine bay is painted.

  I think you can just about see in this pic, for mine I welded a bracket on to the existing one for the windscreen washer fluid, I can get a better pic if you'd like? but I'll have to actually go and take one so might be a little while...

• Nah, I can see that OK but my airbox will be there....
  
  However there seems to be space to the rear of the strut  (where I'm thinking of putting it.)
  
  Hard to tell because of the angle of your pic, but is there anything in the way there? BOV???
  
  I know it clears the brake mechanism (just) so that is no worry.
  
  I did find your picture when I was doing a search to find an answer.

• ah ok, hmmm not sure if theres enough room back there? theres the speedo drive and throttle cable which could cause probs?

• Hey there... Like you, I was a bit concerned about the stock location of the TD filter on my caddy.  I couldn't use the strut tower location because my stock TD intake piping got in the way and I wasn't thrilled about putting my filter right next to the turbo even though I had the stock heat shield and rubber mounted filter stand off.
  
  I took Jake (and others) advice and mounted my NA filter in the passenger fender well.  There's an unused stud or two  in there (used for charcoal canister on gas cars?) you can use to make the bracket mount right up and the lines go through the body in an unused stock hole in the engine bay fender well.  The only thing you have to change is the fuel line length.    
  
  I've had no problems to date (13k miles) and the cabby fender liners even mount up just fine...  This does make the filter a bit harder to change, but it's worth it (for me) to not have the clutter in the engine bay.

• The reversed bracket does tuck the filter in really tight to the strut and raintray.
  
  The nearest thing is the throttle cable and it's clear of that.  
  
  I hadn't considered the turbo heat, but it is on the cold(er) side of the turbo and probably a good distance away. Hard to tell on an empty bay  :?
  
  I'm gonna go with this location and sod's law guarantees there will be something in the way I hadn't considered  :x
  
  If it does work, I'll post a piccy.

• aye that looks fine  from that pic it looks like you could move it round to the front face of the strut tower if you wanted - not that I can see any particular reason to?
  
  I did at one point consider mounting mine actually in the scuttle/rain tray with a couple of hole with grommets to feed the pipes through, it would keep it nice and cool while still allowing fairly easy access....

• this may not work for you,but ihave an a1,,,,i removed the filter bracket,and welded 2 studs to the rad support,under the right side"frame rail",,and mounted it there,,you cant really see it from the top,,and ihave to lay on the ground to drain it, or put it on ramps,,its under that "rail",and i made a plastic shield up to protect it  from front tire throwing debris,like big chunks of rubber from the  tires smoking all the time,,its similar to the a2 splash shield setup in the right wheelwell,,imrunning a lift pumptoo,,so my setup without one may be hard to prime,,,but it does give more room in the engine bay ,sacrifice all in the name of speed!

  the filter is too deep to mount on the front of the strut. It's about 1" proud of where the bonnet would be.
  
  Oh and stewardc, the linkage from RHD pedals and brake servo limits the option for firewall mounting.
