A/C compressor into vacuum pump?
« on: December 01, 2014, 01:55:00 pm »
Could I turn my A/C compressor (I deleted it but I have all the parts) into my vacuum pump instead of using that little garbage one that connects to the oil system?

It might work.  My largest concern would be lubrication of the compressor.  Regardless, I can't imagine wanting to go that route.  The stock rotary vacuum pumps are fantastically reliable, comparatively inexpensive, simple and made for the job.  Using a more complex, more expensive, less reliable part to accomplish the same task seems like a downgrade to me.

Not to mention the problem of driving the oil pump without the vacuum pump in place anyhow...

I would leave the vacuum pump in place.

Thanks for the info everyone. Now I know that trying to do it is just not gonna work.
