In addition to the coolant temp sensor for the gauge and sender for the glow plugs and the fan switch, I believe the later IDI diesels had a coolant switch which cut power to the air conditioner compressor clutch if the engine began to overheat, kind of a dumdum thing and not really necessary, I'm not sure but it could be for that.

90-97 land cruisers have that.
So many blown hg threads on ih8mud start with "i was towing on a long uphill stretch on the hottest day of the year when the radiator tank just exploded! Oh and the AC shut off about an hour before that but that's probably a separate issue."
