'84 GTI turned 1.6 TD
« on: October 26, 2014, 07:54:33 am »
I have been lurking in the shadows watching everyone's threads for many years now on this Forum, and have had a lot of help from the likes of theman53, 53willys, libbydiesel, 8v-of-fury, and others as well...

might I add that I am very glad to know that the site is back online!

My main thread over the years has been over on the VWVortex which has bore some fruit, and has helped me with A1/mk1 chassis stuff, but now I am going to start posting the rest of my build here. I am going to finally get the car going towards paint, and finally towards the beginning stages of the reassembly.

Vortex link: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4056111-My-83-Rabbit-TD-SVO-Build
I know it says '83 rabbit. That is the first car I had when I started the build thread...

So quick synopsis of the build:

Bought the car a couple of miles from my house for $400 in 2007. Wanted a street car, and a track car (two separate cars), but ended up making just one, and sold the rest of the cars. Here is what I am using:

-rebuilt 1.6 TD Mechanical from a 1985(6) Jetta (not sure of exact year since it was in a mk1 chassis when I got it)
-all new bearings,
-.040 overbore with Kobelschmidt pistons,
-reconditioned the head (valve job, and new seals),
-AAZ head gasket (blocked off the extra passage using a section of my oil cap gasket covered in Hylomar),
-ARP head studs (from the ford cosworth engine... older style studs not the new one that was recently developed for the TDI motor) torqued currently up to 80 foot pounds, will heat cycle the block with my block heater for 24 hours (as per theman53's instructions), and then torque it to 100 foot-pounds ,
-oil cooler with a thermostat sandwich plate (works in conjunction with the stock oil to coolant oil cooler),
-K24/26 turbo hybrid - rebuilt with oversized journal bearings (I know you folks don't like that turbo combo...),
-Giles pump (set up to supply fuel for 30psi to 6k rpms),
-rebuilt inj by Giles as well,
-TT downpipe,
-TT 2.25 16v Scirocco w/o a muffler,
-AWIC with a 2.5 gallon reservoir in the trunk (going to run rad fluid through it), bosch gravity feed pump to move the IC coolant,
-Battery is a 900 cca Optima sitting mounted to the spare wheel well,
-A2 radiator off a car with A/C,
-two slim style after market 10" fans to pull down the heat through the 3 levels of coolers I hope to fit into the small space (time will tell)...

I am going to use this thread to help me diagnose my diesel running issues once I get her fired up. Before that happens though I am going to send my car off to get it media blasted (if you go to my vortex thread you will see I have done a lot already, but with the advent of having 2 children now I have no time to finish that(4 yrs old and 9 1/2 months). So I found a company that will finish the media blasting, and put it into an Epoxy primer for me, then comes the final placement, and install of all of my parts into the car (hope they all fit). Welding any last tabs/ mounts that will need to be installed. It is at this point that I am going to fire up the car for the first time! Then I disassemble, and send it the local paint booth to have the engine compartment, and interior sprayed. Once home the car will be reassembled, and then sent over to my other buddy's shop Randy to have the CE2 harness installed for me. Once home I am hoping in the Springtime thereabouts to have the car's exterior finally painted...

I know long winded, but from here on out the thread will be only concerning my motor's performance...

Thanks! Only time will tell if I did everything right. I am looking forward to firing it up the first time.

So I lied about putting the motor in… I still haven't done it. Hopefully within the next month that will finally happen. Things really slowed up having the kids!

I called summit racing about that additive for breaking in my motor, and they recommended a Lucas oil additive. Turns out I can get it just down the street at my local store!
