gearbox leak at selector rod
« on: March 26, 2006, 08:33:22 am »
Hi guys,

found oil leaking from my gearbox, seems to come from the selector rod, where it goes into the gear box.
I bought the seal, but I don't know if I have to open that 27 mm hexagonal plug. the drawing in etka doesn't show enough detail.I can't find anything about it, has anyone done this already? any help is welcome!

you don't have to open the big allen head plug.  Just take all the linkage off till you get to the bare rod (I think something needs to be unscrewed from the rod itself) then you can pull the seal out with a thin screwdriver and push a new seal in its place.  Oil the new seal before you slip it over the gear selector shaft.

Did you by any accident also encounter a bearing ring, I bought it along with the seal, as they were number 23 and 23-a on the partlist in etka,I thought maybe you had to change both?Thanx

yeah I believe there is a washer of some sort.  not sure exactly how it goes together now.  The seal just presses into the hole that the old seal vacates.  You won't be able to see where it is going, so what I did was I got a broken piece of mirror and I placed it behind the transmission and I put the seal in while looking at the mirror.  Kind of weird cause I had to get used to my hands moving in the mirror but I'm used to doing that with shaving every morning so it wasn't that bad
