K14 turbine shaft pitting, stupid question
« on: August 24, 2014, 07:40:02 pm »
I have a k14 turbo that I was planning on rebuilding, but I think I may have a problem... the turbine shaft has some pitting on it. I have no idea how it got there, or why. I am also new to turbos so I have no idea if it is still usable or if the pitted shaft would make the turbo a time bomb? Any thoughts?

I am no turbo expert but I noticed you received no answer yet. There are experts here - just possibly busy.

Can you post a photo of the pitted shaft? No one will have a clue unless you can communicate what you mean by "pitted".
If the shaft shows nearly microscopic pits, your probably fine. If you can catch you thumbnail in them, toss it.

Or, take it to a turbo rebuilder and have them check it out.

He is great and so cheap. For the cost of a good kit you can add a little more and have it professionally balanced, cleaned, and a 12 month unlimited mile warranty. For me it is not worth the risk of doing it myself.

I went in to a local turbo shop and they said the shaft is useless for multiple reasons. When they tried to run the numbers to source a replacement they ran into issues. Apparently this turbo is not the normal k14, they even called Borg Warner who didn't know anything about it, but they are doing some more research and I should get a call tomorrow. The tag numbers are: 068 145 703 T, 89 690 2206, K14, 6084
