Clutch disc thickness inspection
« on: August 24, 2014, 10:56:57 am »
Can the clutch disc thickness be inspected after pulling the sheet metal plate on the bottom of the bell housing on my 92 Eco? My clutch still slips (after adjustment) if I gun the throttle from any RPM in any gear (tach jumps up in RPM instantly and I can hear the engine speed up correspondingly).  If I am gentle on the throttle, accelerating slowly it does not slip. I could drive it like this but I worry that if I need to get out of a tight situation quickly, say to avoid a potential accident, I won't have the acceleration to do so due to clutch slip.

After removal of the plate, should I be able to see the thickness of the friction disc with the help of a borescope? Should I be able to spray brake clean up in there to clean the friction disc and pressure plate to clean it in case it may be contaminated with oil? There are no other symptoms....no noise... clutch engages smoothly etc. I don't want to do a clutch job unless I really have to.

This is a borrowed pic. of said plate

A friend had a 85 Jetta
Clutch slipped for a few weeks when he adds power
Like climbing a hill
And accelerating
We pulled tranny to
Put in a new clutch
The disk with well over 100k still had most of original thickness
But was burned real smooth
Put a new clutch in
Machine shop ground flywheel so it was freshly surfaced
They ground the whole face the same amount so it would bolt on and have the proper distance to machined surface
We replaced all serviceable parts in tranny
Including seals
Throw out bearing
Everything on clutch release lever was either serviceable or replaced
Put it together and within a month it was slipping again
He drove it for another year or so
Never figured it out
I did it the same as I did my car
And mine is fine

Sounds like a possible weakened pressure plate??
And no, you will not be able to see the clutch disk itself with the inspection plate removed.
