boost loss in higher rpm
« on: March 22, 2006, 03:50:08 pm »
i just joined the forums today. hello again everyone. i just bought a 92 TD jetta sometime in early january. after reading thru several posts here i am happy i have the 1.6TD :)

for my first question.

at highway speeds.. or more specific.. above 3000-3500 in 3rd 4th and 5th... i feel the boost cutting in and out. now i don't know for sure that it is the boost doing that but it's just my guess. anyone have any ideas of why it would be causing that?

one thing i do know about the car is the previous owner was playing around with the waste gate i believe. he told me something about screwing something in with an allen key.. that made the car have more boost.

more boost is good but the power cutting in and out is undesireable.

Either you have a turbo\wastegate issue which is causing your boost problem,or a fuel\air issue which isn't spooling the turbo. You could also have a boost leak somewhere.

Start with the simple stuff.Air and fuel filters, check all connections for air\boost leaks, etc.

i don't think its a problem spooling. i think it has something to do with what they did to the wastegate. i would have a look but i've barely looked under the engine since i've got it because it's too cold.. i couldnt even tell you where the wastegate is right now.

but i am moving into a new house soon which is out in the country which has a mechanics garage in it. lift and everything. so i'm going to be doing a lot of work on the car soon. i've had the idea to have a write up with pictures for everything i do. and contribute to this site.

did the allen key thing i mentioned above ring any bells? anyone have any pictures to show me?
