« on: June 09, 2014, 02:01:26 pm »
was looking at this 1994 mk3 golf and was wondering if this was a idi  or tdi   1.6 or 1.9 . I have looked through the FAQs and im still  not sure, I was thinking that this was an import of some sort?

Either 1.9 IDI or 1.9 TDI....I assume it depends on where it was manufactured?!?

That would be a 1.9L IDI - engine code AAZ. :)

thanks that was quick. I thought it looked idi , Is this standard for the USA? I wonder what trans would be at. The reason I was asking was I saw this for sale and my wheels where turning if it could replace my ECO diesel, in favor of some highway trips?

Yeah, that would be a canadian import most likely. The swap into your ecodiesel would be super easy!! They are extremely similar motors, the biggest difference being that the 1.9 is about 3/4" taller than the 1.6 motor.

Looks like the type with a really small turbo... quick spool but that's about it...

And sometimes they have a immobiliser, if so you smash it with a hammer:-)

Does have a lot more torque than the ecodiesel, but if stock not a lot of HP. Ecodiesel also revs better.
If under 1000kg/2000lobster car i would rather tune the ecodiesel....
Transmission wise the 1.9 are often paired with higher gears, so if low rpm's is what you seek it'll probably do good.

Definitely was not offered stock in the USA, but it was sold here in Canada and in the UK.

If it has the transmission that went with the engine it will be a nice diesel ratio with low gearing suitable for highway use.  My old one had a CHD - not great getting moving around town (steep 1st gear) but once you were in second it'd load up the turbo and pull great.  Fantastic on the highway - 4th and 5th are both overdrive gears plus it has a steep differential gear too.  The transmission code will be stamped on the bottom

The AAZ does typically come with a smaller turbo for sure - usually a K03 or a K14.  The K14 is totally fine up to the mid teens PSI-wise while the K03 isn't really much good past stock boost levels.  If it does happen to be a K03 you can swap the turbo from your Ecodiesel over for a bit of an improvement.

The AAZ has a really useless boost pin in its LDA - it has basically no taper whatsoever.  The pin from a 1.6TD is a huge improvement and will add quite a lot of pep.  The AAZ pump itself is great - it has more lift than just about any other pump so it can provide all the fuel you need and then some.

Overall that looks like a really unmolested example of a Mk3!
