Need STANT pressure tester cap part number
« on: April 07, 2014, 10:57:15 am »
Need the part number for the MK1 VW radiator cap and coolant canister test adapters for STANT testers.

I have been removing the top surge tank hose and fitting a tee and reclamping.  Takes too much time.

Does anyone know the part numbers?

How do others pressure test their coolant system and check their surge tank cap?

I too have a Stant tester that only  hooks to the big American radiators.
A plumbers  pressure test fitting, a tee, and a scrap of hose has to do it for the rest.

I use the nipple of the Stant tester, a piece of soft rubber hose, a TEE and splice between the return line and surge tank.
I remember there used to be an adapter for VW MK1s.  THOUGH

12016 Stant Radiator Cap Adapter VW
Thread specifications Metric: 48mm x 3.0

http://www.amazon.com/Stant-12016-Threaded-Radiator-Cooling/dp/B000CKTJXM

When I look this up on Amazon, it said it will not fit my truck, however I have received that message before, and things fit.  Amazon don't dig deep.

I am still looking for an adapter.  Why? because I want one for my kit, and putting the tee in takes too long.

I found this for as low as $14.99 plus shipping. I showed AMAZON because of the picture.

20 PSI radiator cap.  I always thought MK1 had 7-9 PSI.

Lets do a little math:
If it is a 20 PSI cap, that is 212 F ( + 3 degrees F x 20 = 272 degrees Fahrenheit.  COOL :)
If it is 7 PSI cap (212 +7(x3)=233 Fahrenheit
If it is 9 PSI cap (212 +9(x3)= 239 Fahrenheit

Add in adequate Ethelene Glycol, and there is ALMOST no way a VW overheats, if the cap is good, the hoses are tight, and the head-gasket holds

HENCE - I want a pressure cap to test my system without the engine running.

I was once testing a 16 PSI cap on an old vehicle mine, and I tested it (without cap) to 17-18, stopped to hold, and pooooofph, a hose blew.  I was darn glad it busted in my shop, versus on the road.  All vehicles should break in my shop, where I can get the parts and fix it, and never trailer or tow.

I use a Vanagon cap with the spout on it to hook up the pressure tester hose..such as here (blue)  @ http://www.van-cafe.com/home/van/smartlist_677/reservoir-caps-c677

I ordered the pressure tester cap 12016 which will allow me to test the tanks and hoses.
Plus I ordered the adapter 12017 which will allow me to test the cap. 8)

For me, this makes sense.  I have had this particular Caddy since 1992, and owned one always since 1987.  I had four of them before this one, selling each as it was fixed and someone offered me a little profit.  Several (4) others since 1992, as projects to be sold. I will get another in time for a project and sell it also.

My home is 1.5 hours from work, and I often drive this little Caddy to Aberdeen MD for satellite site work.  It is the near perfect example of a daily driver.  I run 9 miles over the speed limit on cruise control most always, and on interstate roll with traffic if faster.  Mileage is so good, I don't worry about it anymore.

Bottom line is my coolant system has to be right and tight.  Quite often I pull it in my shop, put it on four jack stands and check everything out.  That's at least quarterly.  It gets 10K mile oil changes, as with all my diesels.

So for me, a pressure tester makes sense.  Understand, by the tracking number, it has arrived.  I will test it this weekend and report factually or sadly it is or is not the right part number.

Part number 12016 cap and 12017 for plastic adapter work perfect. 8)   Ordered them thru Amazon, and they were cheap ;D
Began testing.  My Cap didn't make 20 lbs.  Wasn't consistent.  I will get a new cap.  Thats the good news.  When I hooked the tester up to my radiator surge tank, I was loosing pressure.  ::) Not much, but enough.  I ran out of weekend and had to put it back on the road.  Funny thing, high 90s outside temp and my needle was almost centered.  Guess the oversized 4 pass Schirrocco radiator makes up the difference.   My o' my, what will I do when that thing is sealed tight and I have a perfect cap?
