What the news car my engine / trans will fit
«

I have a 1.6 Diesel engine and transmission I would like to put in the newest vw car I can find. The engine and trans are out of a 1991 Jetta. I am thinking 1998 is as far as I can go. I am willing to change mounts if I am able to get into a newer Car.

Any Mk3 will work great, just use the 2.0 mounts.

The 99.5 is a Mk4, which uses a totally different type of engine mount system. There are no provisions on the 1.6 for the Mk4 platform mounts.
And yes, a Mk3 is 1993-1999. If you are going that route an AAZ car (Canada only) is a straight drop in, absolutely everything is the same. If you can't find one of those the ABA cars are your next best bet. They will have the correct clutch and gear shift linkages already.

The Beetle is a Mk4. The Mk4 platform was designed specifically for the Beetle, so it was the first car released using all the new stuff.

The B4 Passats are mechanically very similar to the Mk3 (or A3 as they are also called). I don't know the cutoff years for the B4 but basically anything you can do with a Mk3 you can do with a B4.

Ok thanks I am going to look for a early Passat and see what the engine bay looks like. I have a 1.6 with a ff transmission allready to transplant into a newer car. Looking right now on CL for a deal on a car with a blow engine or transmission. I am hoping to find something for around 700-1000. I put a Diesel engine in a 1985 gas Jetta so I am sure I can swap to a newer VW. Thanks
