I just ran a 700 mile, mixed traffic mileage check......46+mpg (US gallons)....just a couple lower than when the car was new 23 years ago...I am the sole and original owner. The car has 290,000 true miles on the odometer. I'd like to nudge 50+ mpg, but it is really tough in mixed traffic conditions.....maybe on a freeway trip??

Changed from light synthetic winter oil to Delo 400 15W-40 and am running an oil consumption check.

Best trick i learned for mpg is stay under 50mph, both the van 1.6td and Golf 1.6D, both 5speed. Golf i got over 70mpg with nonstop driving (no traffic). Stayed under 50mph all the time. Another test and i was going more like 60-65mph, and it dumped down to the 50's... both tests out of town (mostly) and no traffic...

Jetmugg, wow !!!! thanks, just my cup of tea. However, a lot of the speed mods also contribute to economy as long as one keeps the right foot reined in. If one chooses not to do that......go like a bat out of hell with your hair on fire !!!! I appreciate the reference and will bookmark it. Oh, yeah, I have a bicycle with a 250 watt electric off/on motor, charged by solar.....lots of free energy miles !!!!!

Best trick i learned for mpg is stay under 50mph.......

I might try that for a couple of hundred miles out the Columbia Gorge and call it a vacation to Hood River, Or.

Also found on Ecomodder, or can be found on google 'basjoos' 100mpg 92 honda vx with aerodynamic mods. Same aero mods work on anything, particularly small cars & trucks (Caddys). Actually I think mileage starts with aerodynamics. I've been a member for a couple of years. I think an AAZ Caddy, 020/.71 OD gears, with aero mods, may get into the 80s or higher. I'm going to try.

A couple hundred miles is kinda short... unless you're talking 200 each way. 400mi is a reasonable sample.

Mk 2 jetta with an AAZ.... K14 turbo, 3.94 final with a .75 fifth. 195/60 15's om BBS rims. Straight pipe, seriously advanced timing, extra solenoid on pump hooked full time. Fuel pin from a 1.6 and screw twisted in as far as I want to deal with smoke. A small leak added to the turbo line to get a little more boost, not sure how much.
Best mileage is 985 kms on 49 litres, do the math yourself . I did and was shocked. Just driving normal, didn't baby it but didn't pound on it either. Goes like stink when you want it to.....
Road trip to North Bay/Sudbury a couple of years ago from southern ontario. Four people and luggage in the car for a week.

If I did the math right that is about 26mpg? Tell me I did it wrong.

You did it wrong... that's basically 5.0L/100km (which is good) - that translates to 47 MPG.

I think 5l/100km is alot, my MK1 does 3-4L/100km depending on speed and traffic. But ofc, flat out with alot of smoke then its not bad...
