Green Lantern
« on: June 01, 2014, 06:51:01 pm »
Whats happening, I wanted to thank you guys for help with my vw projects, I'm a hard core rwd Toyota guy , But always had a thing for the mk1mk2 chassis even had the opportunity to autocross a gti rabbit a few times. anyhow I picked up an 86 na diesel Jetta last year that needed some love and got her going good enough to sell to another enthusiast. It gave some love back so i was keeping an eye out for a nicer one, Then came this it was advertised as a 1992 NA diesel and after i went and saw it i noticed it was an ecodiesel, I had to buck up 1700 bucks to get this one but from what i learned i couldn't resist.

I gave it the name Green Lantern for a few reasons

lots of windows
burns oil
Its green
and even has its initials on the back.lol

The ecodiesel is a turbo motor. So is it turbo, or NA?

Lol. Eco diesels are slow until you put a turbo pump on it.

The 8mm in stock form holds back quite a bit of fueling, it can do alright with tuning though ;).

Power is not much better than the 86 Na i had,  I have added a boost gauge it builds 7-8 psi Im working on a down pipe and exhaust then i may venturer on to the Govenor/fuel screw tuning bit. Runs great cant get it to go less than 40mpg ac and all, Gets close to 50 when i try.

As for the trans it works good for the driving i do, My 50 mile per day commute only has a 2 mile stretch that is 55 the rest is 40-45. I have the thing running so good i would like to take it for a road trip but the freeway is not friends with the AVX trans, been trying to study on re gearing it, Been looking to just change out the fith gear or re gear the final drive a little , just have not fully go my head rapped around it yet. any tips would be very helpful.

Between your AVX and the lowest geared 020 is only about 550-600RPM. A lotta work for not a lotta "gain".

My gf's 1.6TD has best HWY power AND mileage at 3200. With its stock 4S trans. For you, that would be 67mph.  For me it is 73mph.

Ropadopa  I would think your options are few.  You are already getting the turbo pipe enlarged?  So that is good for flow and that is good for either power or mileage.  I am sort of a MPG guy.  So I have done exhaust, injectors, played with pump settings and timing changes.

As for bang for buck I think after the exhaust you just dump the AVX as it has too high of a final ratio and the top 5th isn't the .71.  So find an FF or something that fits and forget about rebuilding what you have.  There are plenty of transmissions out there so I would chase that end if I were trying for more miles per petrol gallon.

I personally think it would be a waste of time and money, swapping to an FN/FF or similar (3.94 final and .71 5th) would only net you 300 RPM lower cruising.

I drove the 88 1.6TD to work solely everyday 50km each way. On the highway right near home, off the highway right at work. 95% of the trip was 3100-3200 (70-73mph), this is what yielded my best Kilometers driven per Liters used. Yes less engine RPM obviously uses less fuel, but does it ACTUALLY give you better mpg? not all the time ;).

I did the calc on the FF using GearUp after writing,  Duh?  Yeah only a few hundred RPMs.  Maybe play the retarded timing game?  Bump then drive, figure mpg, then bump and drive the next week.

Dont get me wrong i like the MPG's ,

Im after 70-80 mph cruising speeds, even with my speedo reading low 65 it stressing 70 seems harsh, kinda glad there is no tach  lol

thanks thats pretty darn usefull,   I figured i would look into this when it was clutch time.  Is it recommended to stick with  a diesel trans or all of them the same?

Im realizing that there is only a 500-600 rpm gain , so that the difference between 2800 -3200    sounds like allot of difference on a diesel?   where is the red line on these jokers anyhow?
