Where are the Blower motor resisters
« on: May 24, 2014, 06:27:49 pm »
1981 VW Diesel Pickup WITH AIR-Conditioning.
Problem.  Motor noisy.  Apparently resisters went, and I only have high speed
.
I went into this task, as prepared as I could be.  I had read every posting, forum after forum, looked at every attachment.  I had a new motor on hand PN 0 130 062 006 and a complete motor assembly- with fan wheel from a low mileage wrecked caddy.
Getting to the blower motor was thru the top, rain cover off and vacuum on had to start the cleaning.  Removed hard RTV, and screw that held recirculating flap and vacuum ball.  Using 11mm open end thru the access hole from the top, held the nut on the bottom and removed the screw with a cross-tip.  The left side is a 2 person job, and my wife held the 11mm open end on the nut while I used a flexing cross-tip to take out the screw.  Blower cover is off.  More vacuuming and scraping, wiping and cleaning.  Took the one screw and washer that holds the blower motor down, popped the motor end snap retainer and the assembly came loose.  Then I loosened the rubber wire seal retainer, unplugged the motor at the connecter and out it came.  Reversed the process to install the new motor, and tested it.
This old blower motor lasted 32 years.  I have owned this little Caddy since 1992, and the fan has ran almost all the time the truck is running.  The motor had a long, useful life.
New motor is installed.  One wire, one connecter and wire seal on condenser housing.
Nice no more drag, no bearing intermittent squeal.  I now have a strong motor with a smooth sounding fan.  Only one problem.  I still only have high speed.
Every posting I read said resisters were a part of the motor.  Apparently not on models with AC.
Where are the blower motor resisters on models with AC?

http://www.cabby-info.com/Files/ReplacingTheBlowerMotor.pdf

While this is a good reference to get to the motor and get it out, the resisters pictured in step nine and eleven are not there on my MK1 Caddy Diesel Pickup with AC.  I am putting it back together, blower works fine now, albeit on HIGH only, but it sounds nice.
I spent 3 hours cleaning the blower motor cover and recirculating cover.
Since I have owned the truck since 1992, and the fan had fours speeds for 21 of the 22 years I owned it, and I know that I haven't worked on the blower motor previously, my country logic says the resisters are elsewhere.  I'd bet near the switch.

But other than the resister location, and the small detail that the 11mm nuts have to be held with a wrench from the bottom, the cabby-info write up is spot on.  Also, I noticed the nuts had glue on the washer, and perhaps on a newer caddy, the nut is glued on, but as the screw gets corroded with age, the nut spins, perhaps.

My firewall area is in perfect condition, probably some of the best paint on the truck.  No rust and it cleaned up nicely.  While the covers had seafoam sealers, the previous owner (Dallas TX) had RTV'd the outside pile on pile.  I will RTV the sealing area, and if that don't work, remove it and install new seafoam.  At a later date.

More to follow.

Found my Blower motor resisters

On a 1981 VW Caddy Pickup WITH Air-Conditioning, the blower motor RELAY is located:
under dash, mounted right of the steering wheel column on the condenser shroud bracket.  Conspicuous with one plug in..  Squared in design about 4" long.  One plug to fan harness.
NOW!  Does anyone have access to relay as described for MK1 with AC?  PN 175 959 141

That's nice.
I have a set coming which too will work fine, which will replace those in my 81 caddy which currently do not work.
Not.  But I have located all the parts and will post part numbers and details after I successfully close my transaction to purchase them and get them shipped my way.
Problem solved, partially.  The square item I described is actually a relay (PN 175 959 141)

You would look for dodge ones for westy bunny.... Usually the blue diode burns up on them... Most get rebuilt vs german ceramic ones...

The square shaped part I described above is acutally the AC relay for Caddy models with AC, pn: 175-959-141.
On this model with AC, the resisters are  PN 175-959-263.
I have a friend getting me a relay & resister EXTRA.
With this I will have a total package extra, plus I will fix my Caddy.
I will have a new blower motor, new relay and I will repair my resister pack.
Been driving this 32 year old Caddy for 22 years, and if I don't wreck it, plan to be driving it for 30 more years, providiing I stay topside of the grass

On MK1 Caddy Pickups with AC, the blower motor resister pack is located on the RIGHT side of the condenser box, in the passenger footwell area.  You must remove six cross-tip screws and the channel cover over the resister pack and unplug the 4 prong connecter.  BTW, your blower will still work on high without the resister pack.  I removed mine, put the six cross tip and two 7mm screws in a plasic bag, and continued driving my caddy.
At Radio Shack, I found a 139 centrigrade THERMAL FUSE to replace the silver 152 Centigrade Fuse.  Used the smallest drill in my set, near the same size of the fuse wire, drilled a hole in each tab (removed the old fuse) and threaded the wires thru the hole and bent the extra wire tightly.  (If I do this task again, I will drlll 2 holes in each tab and double bend the wire)  Didn't solder, checked for continuity, and had it.  Reversed procedure, Installed  and blower motor works PERFECT.

I am now ready to install the adapter on my pump, my OEM lines and then bend to fit my AAZ with serpentine setup.  To accomodate both AAZ with serpentine and the bothersome OEM lower radiator hose, I installed a Shirrocco left-sided lower radiator bottom inlet 4 row aluminum radiator.  Nice, because it cools twice or three times better than my OEM radiator.  Had to use 2 hoses with a metal pipe clamped to the front lower radiator support.  When I have functioning AC, will post all the part numbers to make the conversion.  MTF.
