Not too hard, IIRC. I did a cyl swap in my 79 rabbit under similar circumstances. Mk2, MK3 probably similar, remove plastic shroud, drill hole, insert punch/pin pull cyl. Bentley should have the detailed info.

It's a little harder on a 1993 than a mk1 because there is a steering wheel collar-adapter on the steering column that you need to first remove with a bearing puller tool, in order to take out the metal housing (I think it's called the steering lock assembly) which holds the ignition cylinder. You do this after removing the steering wheel and switches mounted on the column. There are some alternative ways I've seen to get around this, like trying to access it from the bottom and taking out the whole column, but I think those are much harder than the 'official' way, already owning the tool.

Then you have to drill a certain arbitrary spot in the housing to release the cylinder, or you can get a new housing (or a used complete assembly) for not that much money and you don't have to drill anything. The manuals for these cars cover the procedure in detail as it seems to be a common occurrence, replace the ignition electrical switch while you're in there (very common for these to fail).

If it is broke off in the cylinder, call a locksmith. They can usually pull the piece out with special tools, and then can either have make one for you, or you can take it to a lock shop and they can make one for you there.

I work at an Ace hardware, and I have successfully removed broken keys using a couple picks. Then I made a new one using the two halves of the old key.

Amazing luck.... Went to dealer with my door handle to get a new key made... As I didn't have a spare.... Get back .... Figured for the fun of it , try it in ignition.... Goes in all the way!!!!!!!!:)..... So god knows where the other half of the key went ....

Although if the ignition electrical switch goes what are the symptoms?... Just won't start?
