It never seems to end...
« on: March 21, 2006, 01:21:40 pm »
THis morning on my way into work I couldn't get the car to go completely into 3rd and 5th.  Reverse has been touchy over the last few months.  I tried once to check my manual trans oil but couldn't get the hex cap off.  Is it threaded or just a plug.  I thought it was metal and treaded but seems theres a lip of plastic or something.
BTW 91 Golf 1.6 n/a; 5spd.
Thanks for any and all help.
Out.

It's a 17mm hex plug. You can use an old wheel bolt and a pair of vise grips in a pinch. If your gonna go in there, might as well change it.Drain plug is the same size.Refill with GM Syncromesh fluid, and overfill it slightly by jacking up the left side of the car. This will make 5th gear last longer.

Are you sure the shift bushings and motor mounts are good ? They will cause all kinds of shifting problems.

I'm not sure the bushing are good.  I have conciderable side to side play while in gear.  As far aas the engine mounts are concerned I don't know how to check.  All the busshing seem to be going now.  I just did the front and now I have to do the rear control arms and strut bushing as well I have to repack the rear bearings.
Is it a tough job to redo the shift bushings.  Does the tranny have to come out or can I get access from the top in the car where the shifter goes in?

Thanks Wyldman

No.  still no bentley.  I keep looking on Ebay.  Looks like I'll have to pay full pop.  I called a couple of stores in the ottawa area and noone had stock for the year I needed.
So i'm to look under the hood at the shift linkage and I'm looking for plastic bits (5 of them?).  Correct?
What will allow me to realise that they are worn and need to be replaced?
Thanks in advance.

ive seen them on ebay a few times and im not looking for them :P keep trying they come up all the time.

AFAIK the kit to do all the bushings would be $20-40. i'd do it just for ***s. i like to throw parts at a problem until its fixed b/c i'm lazy at troubleshooting. take a damn good guess and replace it if its cheap

the way you describe it, it sounds like shifter bushings... R 3 5

if you put it in and out of gear while watching the bushing you might be able to detect play in them. could be missing a bushing altogether, my rabbit was.

Concerning the plug: before turning it loose, give it a few slams of the hammer(with the bolt on it),if you don't it might be hard to loosen,as was mine, and you might screw up the hexagonal and you don't want that...me I bought a 17 mm hexagonal, and I extend it with a tube.Careful not to tighten too much, 2.5 daN.m according to Haynes.
Good luck!

thanks all! :D
Tomorrow I have scheduled time away from the store to do some work in the afternoon.  Hopefully everything goes well....
Front bearing, adjust and repack two rear bearings, strut bushings and rear ctrl arm bushings.  Maybe the shift bushing kit if my neighbour doesn't throw me out of the garage first.

buy my bentley:  http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8048301084&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&rd=1

looks like it's going cheap.  As far as your tranny goes, it sounds like a linkage problem.  Linkage is directly in front of the steering wheel in the engine bay, under the power brake booster.  Get a linkage rebuild kit and rebuilt it is the best way.  Also need a centering tool to do the shifter, it can get really worn underneath, especially if the plastic cover has holes in it and the salt and dirt has been getting in
