I'm pretty trans-dumb on anything other than the 020 all my VW junk has had.
Indulge me if this is a simplistic question.
02A's, and swap parts, are cheap enough now I'm actually pondering it.
Not for needing any more robust-ness, but for it being a cheap path to a trans
that isn't 25 years old with 200K plus on it. Professional rebuilds of an 020 are not chap,
and probobly never will be. 02A's are pretty much a dime a dozen now.
Power handling isn't an issue, I'm looking at shift quality.
I drove an 04 Jetta for awhile, shifted like slightly notchy butter, it was pretty great for a VW diesel.
It was worlds better than an 020 in a Rabbit even with new bushings and weighted shift rod.
I'm aware there are less-loose linkage solutions for the 020 and I plan to go that way if I stick with it.
Could I expect later jetta-like shifting from an 02A in my Caddy after the not inconsiderable amount of work
it is to swap?
An 02A will shift like an 02A no matter what platform it is in.
The 04 you have experience with will be an 02J - it has a different shifter completely than the 02A. You however can swap the 02J stuff on to the 02A quite easily!

Shows how much I know on newer trans. Thanks..
After further consideration, I said screw it and ordered USRT's shift linkage kit and short shifter and the mushmaster thingybobber.
Maybe that'll brighten things up.
I know in the MK2 platform I bought the missing linkz kit and was still not pleased. I was kind of pissed about it as I spent 165.00 for the best of the best kit he had and it still was like a small guys leg in one of my boots. Then I bought the ball socket for the shift tower and it shifts like a brand new car. MKI might have something similar?
USRT has a, not cheap, ball socket base the rod passes through. I think it has a bearing in it. It's step two. My wallet hopes it isn't needed.
