1.6TD into MKIII or IV?
« on: April 24, 2014, 06:48:03 pm »
What does it take to do? I am only asking in case say my body got all messed up and my engine and tranny (if it works in a MK3) were fine and built like I want them.

Will it bolt in?
Will the trans work in it?
Would it be better to bolt the engine to a hydraulic clutch trans? If so does it have to be a TDI trans?
What about the electric and wiring aspect to it?
Will the speedo work or will I need a custom dash?

And anything else y'all can think of.

Mk3 would be easiest. Uses the same type of cable driven clutch. The speedo is digitally driven so you would just switch that over to your tranny. No modifications to the dash would be needed for that. As for the glowplugs, you couldhave a momentary switch to heat them up manually or create a homemade harness to use the MK2 glowplug relay. Everything else should be fine. I think you can use 2 of the Mk2 mounts and the third you use from the Mk3.

Im not sure about what it would take in an Mk4

Mark III is easy - I actually just pulled a 1.6TD OUT of my Mk3.  If you start with an ABA car you'll already have all the correct mounts and everything.  It will all bolt up to the 1.6TD block no issue.  You'll need to eliminate the in-tank fuel pump and you'll need to sort out a way to drive the tachometer.

Mark IV on the other hand is a whole different animal.  The engine and transmission mounts are all different plus the Mk4 ECU is much more integrated with the rest of the car's systems.

Ok. Good info. Ya, this is as I said in case say my body went to scrap. I figured a MKIV would be a pain.

How do you just switch the speedo to the tranny if its electric and the tranny is only giving off mechanical? I would do manual glow plugs. I forgot about the intank pump. Thats a big deal. So mounts are easy enough.

I had a 98' Jetta TDI and it was a hydraulic clutch. Do the earlier MKIII's have cable clutches? What if I can only find a hydro clutch car? Will the hydro clutch trans bolt up?

The speed sensor bolts in place of the speedo gear or vice versa. You put whichever part matches your body in the transmission.

The TDI and VR6 had a hydraulic clutch but the ACC (1.8L tbi) and ABA (2.0) cars had cable clutches. Any of the 4 cylinder engines will bolt to any of the 4 cylinder transmissions so yes, you can put a 1.6 on a TDI hydraulic clutch transmission. Bolt pattern for the crank and bellhousing is the same (but different from the VR6)

If you are starting with a TDI car then you'll have the larger diesel sized fuel filler neck and no in tank pump. But if you start with a 2.0 car you get usable cruise control and a car that already has a cable operated accelerator pedal.

If you happened to be in Canada you would want an AAZ car. The 1.6 is drop in on those.

vanbcguy: I did not know you could just switch the sensors like that.
I will just to have to make sure the rolling chassis is not a VR6. Thats not bad.
A cable pedal is a +.
Thanks for the info. Now I know what car I would need. I will just have to swap out the filler neck (tank maybe) on the gasser for the TDI stuff.

Yup, that will work great. Plus 2.0 cars are easy to get cheap. I think you will be able to use the coil power wire for the injection pump. All the gauge senders are the same on a Mk2 1.6 as an ABA. Obviously you will get a check engine light if you leave the ECU in place but everything else should work.
